Warwick, R.I. – January 18, 2017: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City, NY to play the Red Hawks for a game on Tuesday evening. The Lady Knights defeated the Red Hawks 76-56. With the victory the Lady Knights improve to 10-11 on the season.
Both teams came out firing on all cylinders to begin the game with the Lady Knights taking a one point lead 181-7 after the first quarter. CCRI was led in the first quarter by Tiondra Hands (Delray Beach, FL) who scored 10 of her game-high 23 points including two 3-pointers to give CCRI the narrow lead. In the second quarter the game was tied 23-23 until Tri-Captain Mackenzie Brayman (North Stonington, CT) sank a 3-pointer to give CCRI a 26-23 lead. LaGuardia would score four unanswered to take a one point lead 27-26. But the Lady Knights would close out the quarter on an 8-2 run to go into halftime leading 34-29. The 8-2 run was sparked by Tri-Captain Kelsey Hernandez (New Britain, CT) who scored seven of the eight points while Hands had the other point giving CCRI a five point cushion.
In the third quarter once again both teams would score a lot and play evenly with neither team taking advantage scoring 19 points apiece to end the third quarter with the score 53-48 CCRI. The Lady Knights saved their best quarter for last as they thoroughly dominated the final quarter outscoring the Red Hawks 23-8. CCRI was led by Tri-Captain Kelsey Hernandez who scored 11 of her 22 points in the fourth including three 3-pointers while the game’s high scorer Tiondra Hands added two 3-pointers for six points in the fourth to help the Lady Knights pull away and win comfortably 76-56.
Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Tri-Captain Kelsey Hernandez who charted her first Triple-Double of her career scoring 22 points, including shooting 4-5 from 3-point land, with 11 rebounds and 11 assists while adding three steals and a blocked shot! Also playing a huge game was Tiondra Hands with a game-high 23 points, also shooting 4-5 from the land of plenty with nine assists six rebounds and three steals. Rounding out the top performers was Tri-Captain Mackenzie Brayman with a double-double scoring 12 points with 10 rebounds, her third game in a row with 10 rebounds which is her career-high and Tri-Captain Carol Rodriguez (Pawtucket, RI) added 12 points and 10 rebounds as well to help lead CCRI to victory.
The next game for the Lady Knights will be this Saturday when they will travel to Garden City, NY to play the Lions of Nassau Community College at 1pm.
