Warwick, R.I. – January 17, 2017: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Cougars of Genesee community College form Batavia, NY for the 2017 CCRI Basketball Invitational on Saturday. CCRI lost a tough battle to the Cougars 57-55. With the loss the Lady Knights fall to 9-11 on the season.

The Lady Knights had already lost to Genesee at the Cougar Classic 71-50 in Batavia in December so CCRI was out to exact some revenge on their home court. Both teams came out scoring in the first quarter with Genesee scoring 20 and CCRI 16 it was the highest scoring quarter of the game. The Lady Knights were led by Tri-Captain Mackenzie Brayman (North Stonington, CT) who had her best game in her two-years at CCRI. Brayman scored a team-high six points in the first quarter while Tiondra Hands (Delray Beach, FL) contributed five points to keep CCRI close to the high-scoring Cougars. However in the second quarter CCRI had their lowest scoring output of the game scoring just nine points with four from Brayman who was also helped by a 3-pointer from D’Asia Allen (Providence, RI). Luckily for the Lady Knights Genesee only scored 10 points and CCRI would go into the break only trailing by five points 30-25.

In the second half the Lady Knights starting playing better again led by two of their Captains Kelsey Hernandez (New Britain, CT) who scored five points and Brayman who was a key contributor in every quarter. CCRI also got help form a 3-pointer from Tiondra Hands and a basket from D’Asia Allen. Brayman actually gave CCRI a brief 40-39 lead with under a minute to go in the third quarter but the Cougars’ Lauren Watson answered as the quarter came to a close to give Genesee the narrow 41-40 lead with a quarter left to play. Genesee had the lead but the game was tied 47-47 on a basket from Brayman and then CCRI took the lead back ion a basket from Tri-Captain Carol Rodriguez (Pawtucket, RI) making the score 49-47. CCRI would take their biggest lead of the game on a 3-pointer from D’Asia Allen to make the score 55-49 CCRI with a few minutes left in the quarter. The Lady Knights were giving maximum effort but the shots would just not fall for them down the stretch as Genesee would score the final eight points of the game to win by the final count of 57-55.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Tri-Captain Mackenzie Brayman who charted a double-double scoring her second highest career total with 19 points while also matching a career-high with 10 rebounds. Brayman was helped by freshman sharpshooter D’Asia Allen who scored 13 points including three 3-pointers while adding five rebounds and three assists. Also scoring in double-figures was Tri-Captain Kelsey Hernandez with 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals and Tiondra Hands added 10 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.

The next game for the Lady Knights will be Tuesday the 17th when they travel to LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City, NY for a game at 7:00pm. (NOTE: CCRI was originally scheduled to play Sunday in the Invitational but UConn-Avery Point lost a player and could not compete, so CCRI, as hosts, allowed the two out of town teams to play, Genesee and Mercer to make their CCRI Invitational experience whole)
