Warwick, R.I. – January 12, 2017: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the undefeated Mustangs of Central Maine Community College (14-0) from auburn, ME for a game on Wednesday evening. The Lady Knights lost to the Mustangs 77-64. With the loss CCRI falls to 8-10 on the season. With the victory CMCC improves to 15-0 atop the standings of United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA).

The Lady Knights knew they would be in for a very tough contest playing the undefeated Mustangs who had already beaten them in the second game of the season 98-67. Though CCRI was playing the role of underdog and were a bit shorthanded with only six players active they played very well and gave Central Maine a run for their money.

Central Maine burst out of the starting gates quickly with an impressive 11-2 run. After a timeout CCRI began to play better and with more urgency going on a 9-6 run to close the gap to six points by the end of the quarter with CMCC leading 17-11. In the second quarter the Lady Knights closed the gap to one point 22-21 after two free throws from Tri-Captain Kelsey Hernandez (New Britain, CT). CMCC answered with an 8-3 run to extend their lead back to six points 30-24 by halftime.

In the third quarter, the same quarter CMCC made a run in their first meeting, the Mustangs once again were able extend their lead to 13 points. This was not an unsurmountable lead and the Lady Knights were still in striking distance thanks to a great quarter from Tiondra Hands (Delray Beach, FL) who score seven points while D’Asia Allen (Providence, RI) sank two 3-pointers and Tri-Captain Mackenzie Brayman (North Stonington, CT) also added a trey. If CCRI could maintain the hot shooting from long-range in the final quarter they could make a valiant comeback. Unfortunately for the Lady Knights CMCC was quickly able to extend their lead to 17 points. Undeterred CCRI battled back as the tandem of Tiondra Hands and Kelsey Hernandez rattled-off seven unanswered points to cut the lead to ten points with the score 60-50 about halfway through the quarter. Even with two 3-pointers from Hernandez and one from Allen the Lady Knights could not cut into the CMCC lead to make the game any closer as the Mustangs would prevail by the final count of 77-64.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Tri-Captain Kelsey Hernandez with another amazing game scoring a game-high 26 points, team-high eight rebounds, a game-high five steals with two assists while shooting 11-12 from the free throw line. Also putting forth an excellent effort was Tiondra Hands who scored a career-high 17 points with a team high five assists and two steals while shooting an impressive 9-12 from the free throw line. Also contributing was D’Asia Allen with nine points on three 3-pointers, Tri-Captain Mackenzie Brayman had five points, four rebounds and two steals, Angela Velleco (Coventry, RI) added four points and Tri-Captain Carol Rodriguez (Pawtucket, RI) contributed three points, seven rebounds and two steals.

The Lady Knights are back in action tonight Thursday the 12th when they will host the Bayhawks of Bristol Community College from Fall River, MA at 6:00pm.
