Warwick, R.I. – December 12, 2016: The CCRI lady Knights basketball team traveled to Genesee Community College in Batavia, NY to compete in the 2016 Genesee Cougar Holiday Classic over the weekend. On Saturday CCRI faced the Cougars of Genesee and fell to the hosting school 71-50. With the loss the Lady Knights fall to 7-6 overall.
Both the Lady Knights and Cougars battled closely in the first quarter. Rosalyn Seeley made one of two free throws to give the Cougars a one point lead 8-7 but D’Asia Allen (Providence, RI) sank a 3-pointer to give CCRI the 10-8 lead and Tri-Captain Kelsey Hernandez (New Britain, CT) followed with another basket to increase the CCRI lead to 12-8. However, Genesee would close the quarter with an 8-1 run to take a 16-13 lead after one quarter. The Lady Knights outscored Genesee in the second quarter 15-13 led by Kelsey Hernandez who scored six points followed by Tri-Captain Carol Rodriguez (Pawtucket, RI) who added four points which gave CCRI momentum going into the second half trailing by just one point with the score 29-28 Genesee.
The momentum for CCRI did not last through the break as the third quarter was just plain abysmal for the Lady Knights as they only managed to score four points while Genesee rattled off 24 points to take a 21 point lead going into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter CCRI played much better but could never really cut into the Cougars’ lead as Genesee went on to win buy the final score of 71-50.
Leading the way for CCRI was Tri-Captain Kelsey Hernandez who scored a game-high 20 points with nine rebounds, a team-high six assists and two steals and Tri-Captain Carol Rodriguez came off the bench to chart a double-double scoring 13 points with 12 rebounds with four assists and led the Lady Knights with four blocked shots. Freshman D’Asia Allen also helped the CCRI cause scoring 11 points with three 3-pointers, four rebounds, three assist and a steal.
The Lady Knights have no time to rest as they will face the No. 18 ranked and undefeated (10-0) Thunderwolves of Niagara County CC at 11am on Sunday to complete their play in the Cougar Holiday Classic.
