Warwick, R.I. – August 29, 2016: The CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team traveled to Garden City, NY to compete in the 2016 Nassau Invitational on Saturday. The Invitational feature the Lazers of Onondaga Community College from Syracuse, NY, the Bulldogs of Bergen Community College from Paramus, NJ, the Lions of Nassau Community College and the Lady Knights of CCRI. The Lady Knights began eth season with a flourish going a perfect 3-0 during the Invite! First they defeated Nassau 26-24, 25-10 and 25-14 then Bergen Community College 25-19, 25-15 and 25-20. The Lady Knights ended the Invite by beating Onondaga Community College 25-19, 25-9 and 25-12. To begin the season with a perfect 3-0 record!
The Lady Knights were back at it! They definitely came to play! However in their first match they began a little slowly. But, after tasting victory, the Lady Knights were hungry for more. They ended up sweeping Nassau Community College in three. Tri-Captain Amanda LaCroix (East Freetown, MA) finished the first match with five kills, 12 digs and two aces. Melanie Diaz (New Bedford, MA) kills it on the service line to give CCRI three aces on key points. Megan Johns (Burrillville, RI) finished with two aces and three blocks. CCRI Head Coach Sam Amaral commented after the first match of the season “I couldn’t have been more proud of my girls on the first game of the season.”
What a match! The first 10 points in each game were back and forth. The CCRI Lady Knights did not let the tightness of the situation shake them. Their passing and serving were what won this match. The Lady Knights were smart about placement of the ball. Even in chaotic plays the girls bettered the ball and allowed the other team to make mistakes. Dahlia Rafael-Tirado (Warwick, RI) has come along so much since the beginning of practice to begin the season. She was a libero and has been converted to a setter and is taking this responsibility masterfully. Tirado had 24 assist, five digs and an ace. Amanda LaCroix had eight kills, three aces and 19 digs while Megan Johns finished the match with six kills and two digs. Melanie Diaz had eight kills, and 10 digs. Rounding out the CCRI top performers was Angelis Perez (Central falls, RI) who did great on the service line with four aces and Tri-Captain Mackenzie Easterbrooks (Plainville, CT) did great as the starting Libero with two aces and 18 digs.
Head Coach Sam Amaral was excited about this match as were the Lady Knights as you can tell form her comments “This was the game that the Lady Knights were waiting for! Onondaga had the same record at 2-0. They were a loud team that was very tall. In this match the Lady Knights really began to gel as a team. They were covering, playing hard and cheering each other on. A ball didn’t hit the floor without a Lady Knight body hitting the floor right behind it.” Amanda LaCroix finished this match with 15 kills and 12 digs. Melanie Diaz did an amazing job in the back row, getting 21 digs with an ace and three kills. Mackenzie Easterbrooks finished the game with two aces and five digs. Megan Johns did a great job as her first day as a Middle Hitter with three kills, a block, six aces and two digs. Sophomore Carol Rodriguez (Pawtucket, RI) did great finishing this game with 1.5 blocks, two kills and one dig while Tri-Captain Haley Smith (Cumberland, RI) finished with 5.5 blocks.
The Lady Knights have a week off until their next tournament where they will travel to Columbia, MD to compete in the Howard Community College Dragon Invite next Saturday and Sunday September 3rd and 4th.
