Warwick, R.I. – April 10, 2017: The CCRI Lady Knights softball team hosted the Mustangs of Monroe College for a doubleheader on Saturday at Winslow Park in Warwick. The Lady Knights lost both games 7-3 and 4-3. With the two losses CCRI begins the season 0-2.
Game 1: CCRI- 3 Monroe- 7
The Lady Knights quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as the first three batters scored. However, the Mustangs chipped away at the lead scoring one in the fourth inning and then three in the sixth and then three unearned runs in the seventh inning to lose by the final count of 7-3.
In the circle for the Lady Knights was Tri-Captain Courtney Sheridan (Warwick, RI) who pitched much better than the score line of the game. Sheridan, the Lady Knights’ single-season strikeout leader, who had 148 strikeouts in 2016, picked-up right where she left off amassing 14 strikeouts in her season-opener. Unfortunately for her and the Lady Knights poor defense led to an early lead evaporating as they ultimately fell by the score of 7-3. Sheridan threw seven strong innings allowing three earned runs on three hits, walking four and striking out 14 Mustang batters the second highest total of her career. Courtney had 16 K’s vs Sacred Heart University in her freshman campaign.
Offensively for the Lady Knights they only managed three hits led by Tri-Captain Bella Malvinni (Westerly, RI) who went had a single and a run scored. Also helping CCRI was freshman first baseman Miranda Sasso (Smithfield, RI) who also added a hit and freshman centerfielder Liz Bailey (Warwick, RI) also added a double for. Tri-Captain Courtney Sheridan and freshman third baseman Danielle David (West Greenwich, RI) both added a run scored apiece.
Game 2: CCRI- 3 Monroe 4
Once again the Lady Knights had the lead first in the second game of the doubleheader leading 1-0 after three innings. Monroe tied the game in the fifth inning 1-1. But, CCRI answer the Mustangs’ small rally with a two run rally to take a 3-1 lead. However, Monroe answered back with one in the sixth and two in the seventh while holding the Lady Knights scoreless to win by the final score of 4-3.
In the circle for the Lady Knights was freshman Kailee Morgan (Charlestown, RI) who pitched well in her first collegiate game. Morgan threw seven strong innings allowing four runs on six hits, walking one and striking out seven Mustang batters. Morgan pitched very well but some late defensive miscues led to her taking the loss in a game she pitched well enough to win.
Offensively for CCRI catcher Miranda Sasso led CCRI with two hits and three RBIs and Kailee Morgan helped her own cause adding two hits and a run scored. Also helping the Lady Knights was Danielle David with a hit and two runs score and Tri-Captain Bella Malvinni added a hit and a stolen base. Rounding out the CCRI offense was Liz Bailey and Tori Hoard (Exeter, RI) who added a hit apiece.
The next games for the Lady Knights will be Sunday when they host the Huskies form Northeastern University Club team for a doubleheader at 1:00pm. These games will be the Coaches vs Cancer Pink Out games for the Lady Knights as they will wear pink uniforms, line the field in pink and raise money and awareness for Cancer.
