Warwick, R.I. – Monday Sept 28, 2015: The CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team traveled to New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord, NH Saturday to compete in the NHTI Lynx Invitational. The Lady Knights dominated the tournament winning all five matches while losing only one set on their way to victory. With the 5-0 weekend the Lady Knights improve to 12-6 overall and 2-0 in Region XXI play. CCRI freshman Outside Hitter Amanda LaCroix (East Freetown, MA) earned All-Tournament honors while Tri-Captain Emily Taylor (South Kingstown, RI) earned Tournament MVP honors.
Head Coach Samantha Amaral commented “The Lady Knights played great this match. The momentum they started at the CCRI Classic continued once again this weekend. The girls are playing like a team. They are working hard and working together to win each match.” CCRI controlled the match from the very beginning and won 25-11 and 25-21. Leading the way statistically for CCRI was Sophia Mazzocca (Lakeville, MA) ended the match with six kills and two aces. Also playing well was Ormarie Colon (Providence, RI) who had six kills, two aces and four digs while Tri-Captain Kayleigh Clausen (Wakefield, RI) had nine digs and an ace.
Coach Amaral commented “The Lady Knights came out fighting hard to win this match. Set two the Lady Knights learned that teams will never just ‘give them a set’. UMM came out fighting in game two. They had some tough serves and good tips to give them a 7 point lead in game two. The lady knights came back fighting this match. With some key kills by Amanda and aces by Emily the Lady Knights were able to take this game as well.” Leading the way for CCRI was Amanda LaCroix who finished with 10 kills, two aces and 11 digs. Sophia Mazzocca had seven kills. Also Helping the Lady Knights was April Von (Providence, RI) who finished the match with 10 digs while Emily Taylor had 17 assist, two aces and eight “key” digs.
“This was exciting match!” exclaimed Coach Amaral. She added “The NHTI volleyball team wanted with match more than ever on their home court. So did the Lady Knight. In set one Amanda, Emily and Sophia did great defending our net and at the service line Emily and Sophia did amazing giving the lady nights seven aces total for the match.” The teams had both coaches at the edge of their seats waiting for their team to show how much they truly wanted it. The match concluded with an amazing third set by the Lady Knights showing no errors. Giving the lady Knights a hard fought 2-1 match victory. Amanda LaCroix finished with four kills and 23 digs! Emily Taylor had 23 assist with two kills. Tri-Captain Hailey Smith (Cumberland, RI) had six kills and four blocks. Rounding out the CCRI top performers were Ormarie Colon with six kills, Sophia Mazzocca and Victoria Parente (Johnston, RI) finished with four kills apiece.
The Lady Knights were very excited about making it once again to a Semi Finial. Coach Amaral rallied her team “In the beginning of the match I grabbed the girls and told them to take each point one at a time. The girl then looked at me and told me that there was no way they would be going down without a fight. The girls fought hard to win this game and move on to the finals today.” The words of encouragement paid off as the Lady Knights won convincingly 25-11 and 25-14. Amanda LaCroix finished with three kills, and nine digs. April Von finished with eight digs. Freshman hitter Dominique Baron (Middletown, RI) had one BIG block in set two. Emily Taylor had 16 assists, a kill, a dig and two aces. Sophia Mazzocca had seven kills and Victoria Parente finished with four kills.
Coach Amaral commented after the Finals “I was nervous this match, the Lady Knights were tired and sore from the long day of play.” She pulled them all to the side and told them, "It doesn't matter what you did this earlier. It’s the FINALS! You will have to put it all down on the line to finish this day with the win! LETS TAKE HOME THIS VICTORY!.... she added “Together we fight together we win.” The Lady Knights finished with an undefeated 5-0 record today.
Leading the way for CCRI was Amanda LaCroix who finished the finals with five kills and eight digs. Emily Taylor had 21 assist, a kill, nine digs and an ace. Hailey Smith had seven kills, one blocks two digs. Kayleigh Clausen had seven digs. Ormarie Colon had four kills, a dig and an ace. Sophia Mazzocca finished with eight kills, three blocks, three digs and two aces. Victoria Parente added two assist, two kills and five digs. Coach Amaral summed up the perfect day with “I couldn't be more proud of my girls and the way they played this weekend.”
The Lady Knights have two weeks off until their next matches which will be when they host their Dig Pink event Saturday October 10th versus Region XXI foe Bulldogs of Bunker Hill Community College.
