Warwick, R.I. – July 16, 2009: The CCRI Knights men's soccer team hosted the Bayhawks of Bristol Community College from Fall River, MA Wednesday afternoon at the CCRI soccer complex in Lincoln. The Knights defeated the Bayhawks 1-0. With the victory the Knights improve to 3-10 on the season.
The Knights came out ready to play. Head Coach Gabe Toro made some changes in the midfield inserting Sindio Freitas (Cape Verde) and Aris Santiago (Seekonk, MA). Knights’ Captain Nate Dacosta (Warwick, RI) combined with Freitas and Santiago to create more possession for the Knights. About 12 minutes into the game Dacosta was able to dribble up the middle and drop it off to Trevor Lopes (Cumberland, RI) on the right side. Lopes unleashed a powerful shot to put the ball into the back of the net and give CCRI a 1-0 lead. The Knights had other scoring opportunities but were unable to convert. Sophomore Zach Bromage (Warwick, RI) had another excellent game locking down the right side of the defensive corps. Goalkeeper Christian Ellerbe (North Kingstown, RI) also had a good game in the net for the Knights. Ellerbe made some excellent saves including a HUGE save on a breakaway towards the end of the second half. The Knights allowed Bristol to stay in the game by not scoring more goals when the chances presented themselves.
Overall the Knights were able to play with more composure, which is something the coaching staff has been asking of them. The Knights play good team defense but often relinquish the ball immediately after winning it because they are looking to create forward movement right away. This tactic causes the players to rush it and nothing develops. During this game the Knights were able to control the possession and tempo of the game.
The Knights next game for the Knights will be at home in Lincoln this Saturday the 17th at 1:00pm when they host the Wolverines of Essex County College. Saturday will also be Sophomore Day when the nine Knights’ sophomores will play their last home game in a CCRI uniform. The players honored will be: Tri-Captain Brandon Iannelli (North Kingstown, RI), Tri-Captain Nate Dacosta, Tri-Captain Steve Zelepos (Stonington, CT), Ibrahima Male (Pawtucket, RI), Casey Iannelli (North Kingstown, RI), Trevor Lopes, Sindio Freitas, Jackson Acciaoli (Greenville, RI), and Zach Bromage.
