Warwick, R.I. –November 9, 2015: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to Frederick Community Frederick, MD to play in the Frederick Tip-off Tournament over the weekend. On Saturday they faced off against the Lions of CCBC-Dundalk. The Lady Knights fell to the Lions 39-36. With the loss CCRI’s record falls to 1-1.
In a battle of defenses the Lions and Lady Knights battled closely in the first half with no team grabbing a clear advantage. After one quarter the score was 9-8 Dundalk. The Lions jumped ahead by five points in the second quarter but the Lady Knights were able to close out the half with a 10-4 run capped by a 3-pointer by Co-Captain Lyric Artis (Albany, NY) to go into the break with a slim 18-17 lead.
In the second half the Lady Knights came out of the gates well and took a six point lead 27-21 on a 3-pointer by Co-Captain Haley Beausoleil (Plainfield, CT). Dundalk closed the lead to 27-24 by the end of the third quarter. Dundalk tied the game early in the fourth as both teams wrestled for the lead. The Lions went on an 11-4 run to lead 38-31. CCRI did their best to come back but were held off by the Lions who went on to win by the final count of 39-36.
Maritza Gustave (Fall River, MA) led the Lady Knights with nine points, 16 rebounds and three steals, followed by Briana Gerena (East Hartford, CT) with nine points and two assists. Also helping CCRI was Co-Captain Lyric Artis with eight points, five rebounds and two assists and Co-Captain Haley Beausoleil with seven points and Kennethah Harden (Roosevelt, NY) added nine rebounds.
The Lady Knights will face-off against the host Frederick CC on Sunday to complete their play in the Frederick Tip-off Tourney.
