Warwick, R.I. – November 25, 2015: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to Middletown, NY to play the Colts of Orange County Community College on Tuesday evening. The Lady Knights rallied to score the game’s final five points to defeat the Colts 64-59. With the victory the Lady Knights improve to 4-6 on the season.
Both teams battled back and forth for the entire game in this hectic see-saw contest. The first quarter saw Orange County jump out to a 15-10 lead on a basket from Dorothy Tighe but the Lady Knights scored 10 unanswered points, six from Co-Captain Haley Beausoleil (Plainfield, CT) who sank two 3-pointers to take a 20-15 lead by the end of the quarter. In the second quarter Orange kept the pressure on CCRI outscoring them 16-14 in the quarter but the Lady Knights got eight second quarter points from Briana Gerena (East Hartford, CT) which included two 3-pointers to keep CCRI in the lead with the score 34-31 at the half.
With neither team able to establish a clear advantage the game remained tight as the second half began. Orange County was able to tie the game twice in the third quarter, once at 36-36 and then later in the quarter with the score 44-44 but another 3-pointer from Gerena gave CCRI the 47-44 lead going into the final quarter of play. CCRI tried to pull away from Orange and took a 57-51 lead, but the Colts would not go quietly as they battled back to tie the game 59-59 in the final moments of the game. However, in the end the Lady Knights buckled down to score the game’s final five points on a basket from Kennethah Harden (Roosevelt, NY), followed by two clutch free throws form Alexis Antonacci (Plainview, NY) and one from Beausoleil to win by the final count of 64-59.
Leading the way for the Lady Knights was freshman Briana Gerena with a team-high 21 points including a career-high five 3-pointers with three assists and two rebounds. Gerena was helped by Co-Captain Haley Beausoleil who added 14 points with nine rebounds, four steals, two assists and a blocked shot. Also having a big game for CCRI was Kennethah Harden with her eighth double-double in 10 games scoring 12 points with 12 rebounds with four steals and a blocked shot while Alexis Antonacci did an excellent job running the point for CCRI scoring nine points, including 4-4 from the free throw line, while dishing out a game-high seven assists with three steals.
The Community College of Rhode Island, New England’s largest comprehensive community college, enrolls nearly 18,000 students in credit courses and thousands more in non-credit and job training classes. Its athletic program boasts 12 varsity programs and an academic support program for all student-athletes.
