Warwick, R.I. – November 4, 2015: The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team opened up their regular season play yesterday as they hosted the Bulldogs from Bunker Hill Community College. In a Region XXI matchup, the Knights fought hard but lost the game by the final score of 87-69. The loss puts the Knights at 0-1 on the year and 0-1 in Region XXI play.
The game was fast paced in the first 10 minutes as both teams looked energized by opening night. It did not take long for either team to shake the rust off as they were both able to put the ball in the basket in the first half. The half concluded with both teams hitting three-pointers, as Bunker Hill knocked down a three ball and then Adrian La Fleur (Warwick, RI) drained one from deep for the Knights to put the score at 36-29, Bunker Hill with the lead.
Bunker Hill was able to pull away in the second half on a barrage of made three pointers. The Bulldogs were able to knock down seven triples which put the Knights in a tough spot to bounce back from. The Knights were able to score 40 points in the second half, but just could not find hold on defense as they allowed 51 second half points.
The player of the game for the Knights was 6’5’’ Freshman Tri-Captain Edvaldo Ferreira (Cape Verde), who poured in a team high 20 points, which included multiple driving dunks, and also posted a game high 17 rebounds and swatted away five shots on defense. Fellow freshman Adrian La Fleur (Warwick, RI) was also able to show his scoring touch by chipping in 12 points for the Knights.
Head Coach Rick Harris had this to say after the game, “Obviously we did not defend very well tonight especially the three point shot. We also failed to rebound as a team the way we need to if we want to win and those missed rebounds led to way to many second chance points. Bunker Hill is a good team and will make you pay for those type of mistakes. Now it’s back to practice and work to improve on those areas of need.”
The Knights 2015-2016 roster is loaded with freshman as they enter the season with 11 on the roster. Also for the first time under Coach Harris the Knights will be led by three Freshman Captains, Edvaldo Ferreira, Joe Santiago (Willimantic, CT) and Jessy Taveras (Cranston, RI).
The Knights travel to Fall River, MA on Thursday to face another Region XXI opponent in Bristol Community College at 7 pm.
