Lady Knights Take Region on Sophomore Day as Sheridan Sets K Record!

Warwick, R.I. – May 2, 2016: The CCRI Lady Knights softball team hosted the Bulldogs of Dean College for the 2016 Region XXI softball championship on Saturday. The Lady Knights defeated Dean 8-0 and 8-0 to win the Region Championship and improve to 20-8 overall and 13-1 in Region XXI play. Saturday was also Lady Knights’ sophomore day as seven players were honored before some of their final home games of the season. The sophomores honored were: Kristina Rodriguez (North Kingstown, RI), Sam Archambault (North Smithfield, RI), Tri-Captain Jess Spargo (Westerly, RI), Meg Rousseau (Richmond, RI), Mikayla Fernandez (Burrillville, RI), Tri-Captain Jenna Urso (West Warwick, RI), and Tri-Captain Erica Jewett (Coventry, RI).

Game 1: CCRI- 8 Dean College- 0

In the circle for the Lady Knights was Courtney Sheridan (Warwick, RI) who toed the rubber with 125 strikeouts and had the CCRI single season strikeout record of 131 set by Marian Long in 2010 well within her reach. In the third inning with opposing pitcher Nina Taylor at bat Sheridan made history with her 132nd strikeout. Head Coach Liz Afonso immediately asked for timeout to go to the circle for a conference to present Sheridan with the game ball of after reaching the milestone. Courtney was dominant the entire game throwing a four-hit shutout walking two and striking out nine batters which brought her single-season record to 134 by the end of the first game.

Offensively for the Lady Knights the top of the order led the way with Meg Rousseau, Kristina Rodriguez and Tri-Captain Jess Spargo led the way. Rousseau was 3-3 with a single, a double and a home run with an RBI and three runs scored. Meg singled stole second and third and scored in the first, homered in the third and doubled and scored in the fourth. Rodriguez added two doubles, an RBI and a run scored. She doubled, stole third and scored in the five run third and hit an RBI double in the fourth. Spargo sacrificed in Rousseau to start the scoring in the first inning then singled in Rodriguez in the third. Also helping the CCRI offense was sophomore Mikayla Fernandez with a two-RBI single in the five run third and Tri-Captain Jenna Urso added a hit and an RBI while Tri-Captain Erica Jewett scored twice and Jenna Beauchamp (Warwick, RI) scored once.

Game 2: CCRI- 8 Dean College- 0

Getting the start in the circle for the Lady Knights was sophomore Tri-Captain Erica Jewett who pitched three strong innings allowing no runs on four hits, walking two and striking out four batters to earn her first victory of the year while keeping her ERA at 0. Jewett pitched into the fourth inning but left with the bases loaded when Courtney Sheridan came in to slam the door shut over the final two frames allowing just one hit walking one and striking out two batters. With the two strikeouts Sheridan extends the CCRI single-season strikeout record to 136 for the season.

Offensively for the Lady Knights Tri-Captain Jenna Urso had two hits including a double with three RBIs and a stolen base while Jenna Beauchamp added two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored for CCRI. Maddy Cooper (Pawtucket, RI) had two hits including a double with an RBI and runs scored, Tri-Captain Jess Spargo had a two RBI triple and Kristina Rodriguez added two hits, including a double with two runs scored and a stolen base. Also helping CCRI were sophomores Erica Jewett and Meg Rousseau who each had a hit and runs scored.

The Lady Knights now host the District K Championship next weekend Saturday May 7th and Sunday 8th at Winslow Park. They will face Region III Champion and No. 16 ranked (NJCAA DII poll) Mercyhurst North East (33-15) from North East, PA and the Region XIX Champion which is still to be determined on Tuesday at the completion of the Region XIX Championship between the County College of Morris and Delaware Tech-Owens. The Lady Knights will be playing at 10am Saturday and 2pm Saturday for sure depending upon outcome will decide the rest of their fate. Full bracket and schedule will be released Wednesday May 4th.
