Warwick, R.I. – May 2, 2016: The CCRI Knights continued their late season road trip on Friday and Saturday as they would face off against the Community College of Baltimore Catonsville both days. On Friday afternoon, the Knights lost to Catonsville 11-6 but came right back on Saturday morning to defeat them 2-0. The split put the Knights record at 14-10 on the season.

Friday: The Knights offense scored double digit runs in each of the last two games and they started off Friday’s game right where they left off in those games. Singles by Co-Captain Brandon Escalante (Pembroke, FL), Austin Davis (Hollywood, FL) and Edison Mercado (Providence, RI) loaded the bases with no outs to start the game. Dylan Brooks (Lookeba, OK) took advantage of the situation by doubling to score Davis and Escalante. The Knights then expanded their 2-0 lead with an RBI groundout by Travis Collins (Cranston, RI) and single by Edwin Pichardo (Hollywood, FL) to go up 4-0.

Catonsville came right back at the Knights and scored six runs in the bottom of the first to take a 6-4 lead after one. In the fourth, both teams added a run as the Knights got theirs on an RBI single from Mercado. Catonsville added three more runs in the sixth to push the lead to10-5. The Knights finally added one more in the ninth to make it 11-6, but there would be no big comeback in this game as they took the loss.

Mercado finished 3-4 in the game with one RBI and a run scored. Escalante went 2-5 in the game with a run scored while Brooks added a hit, a run and two RBI’s.

Saturday: After a high scoring affair on Friday night, it was only fitting that Saturday mornings game would be a pitcher’s duel. The Knights sent Justin Jacobsen (Fair Haven, MA) to the mound hoping he would limit the explosive Catonsville offense. Jacobsen did just that and more for the Knights as he fired a complete game shutout for his third win of the season. The Massachusetts native allowed six hits and a walk while striking out six. A big key for him was throwing 21-28 first pitch strikes and throwing 74 of his 98 pitches for strikes.

It took a while for the Knights offense to give Jacobsen a lead to work worth but in the end it was just enough to win. The Knights picked up their first run in the sixth inning on back to back two out doubles, the first from Co-Captain Brandon Escalante, who then was brought home by Travis Collins’ double to left. Mercado was able to add another run for the Knights when he doubled home Mike Santos (Cranston, RI), who was pinch running and stole second before scoring, pushing the score to 2-0. The lead was plenty enough cushion for Jacobsen who finished the game off for the shutout.
