Warwick, R.I. – March 2, 2016: The CCRI Knights Men’s Basketball team had two players selected to the 2016 All-Region team for Region XXI in 2016. Josh Mann (Detroit, MI) and Captain Edvaldo Ferreira (Cape Verde) were both rewarded for their outstanding 2015-2016 season.
Mann was a transfer sophomore who started 25 games for the Knights during the season. Mann averaged 11.3 points on the season to go along with his 6.2 rebounds per game. His season-high in points was 20 which he scored against UConn Avery-Point when he went 9-10 from the field and added nine boards. Mann charted double-figures in scoring in 18 of the 27 games he played and in 12 of the 15 region games in which he played. In fact, Mann’s best game of the season was in a Region XXI victory over Massasoit where he charted a double-double scoring 17 points in the game while also collecting a season-high 15 rebounds. That was one of two double-doubles on the season for him, the other coming against Bristol Community College, where he had 15 points and 12 boards to help the Knights earn their first win of the season.
Edvaldo Ferreira was one of the most dominating players CCRI has had in recent memory and has already secured himself in the history books after just one season. He not only led the team in scoring, rebounding and blocks per game, but also led the NJCAA DII in two of those categories. He finished first in the country with 14.2 rebounds per game and first in blocks per game with 5.0. Edvaldo also finished with 17 points per game on an efficient 60 percent from the field.
Edvaldo also posted an incredible 23 double-doubles on the season. He scored double digit points in 24 of the 26 games he played in while also posting double digit rebounds in 24 out of the 26 games. Four times he reached 20 rebounds in a game with his season-high coming against Region rival Massasoit where he pulled down 21. He also scored 22 points in that game for his first of two 20-20 games, the second coming against the other Region XXI rival, Dean College, where he ripped down 20 boards and scored 22 points. During his freshman campaign Ferreira amassed 383 rebounds which was second most in a single season behind only Walt “Stretch” Edwards who owns the single-season record of 388 set in 1972-73.
Valdo’s season high in points was in the second matchup versus Massasoit where he poured in 33 points on an efficient 13-17 from the field. He also had 19 rebounds in the game and added four blocks. That game was part his best scoring stretch of the year where he had 26, 33 and 27 points while shooting 32-45 from the field.
Edvaldo’s biggest impact to most games though was his defense where he set the CCRI single-season record for blocked shots with an immense total of 132 for the season. He was a forced to be reckoned with for opposing teams as he was a relentless shot blocker and rim protector. His 5.0 blocks per game led all of NJCAA DII and the second closest was only at 3.4 per game. Valdo’s season high in blocks was nine, which he did twice. He also swatted four or more shots in 22 games this season.
