Knights Complete Florida Trip with Tough Loss

Warwick, R.I. – March 29, 2016: The CCRI Knights baseball team played their final game in Florida on Saturday as they faced off against St. Lawrence from Canada. The Knights were not able to end their trip with a win and lost 5-4 in another close one. The loss drops the Knights to 4-5 on the year, but all five losses have been by three runs or fewer.

The Knights hit well in the game, collecting 11 hits but were only able to turn that into four runs. The Knights gave up a run in the bottom of the first before scoring three of their four runs in the top of the second. St. Lawrence added one more in the third and one in the fifth to tie the game at three. CCRI responded with a run in the sixth to regain the lead at 4-3.

St. Lawrence took advantage of having the final at-bats though as they rallied in the last inning. They were able to get runners on base and then a big walk off double that sent both runners home to win the game for them.

Co-Captain Brandon Escalante (Providence, RI) went 3-3 from the plate for the Knights out of the leadoff spot. Dylan Brooks (Lookeba, OK) had a solid game going 2-3 from the plate with a walk and two steals.

Robert Paulino (Miramar, FL) had two hits for the Knights and drove in two of the teams four runs. Edwin Pichardo (Hollywood, FL) also knocked in a run for the Knights while going 1-2 with a walk and two runs scored.

Head Coach Ken Hopkins had this to say about the game, “Tough loss today. Walk off double in bottom of seventh with two outs scores two, Three one run losses has the Knights snake bitten but the team got better each and every day down here (In Florida).

The Knights will play a double-header on bother Friday and Saturday this weekend. Friday they face off against Southern Maine Community College at 3:30, while Saturday they will host Region XXI rival UConn Avery-Point starting at noon.

The Community College of Rhode Island, New England’s largest comprehensive community college, enrolls nearly 18,000 students in credit courses and thousands more in non-credit and job training classes. Its athletic program boasts 12 varsity programs and an academic support program for all student-athletes.
