Warwick, R.I. – March 23, 2016: The CCRI Knights baseball team continued their play down in Florida on Tuesday as they had a full slate of games throughout the day. The Knights played three games on the day with the first two against Rowan College Burlington County from New Jersey. The Knights won 6-4 in game one then dropped the second game 6-5 in two very competitive games. Game three of the day was a night game versus Rollins College JV. The Knights lost 10-7 to Rollins in a high scoring matchup. After the three games the Knights are now 4-3 on the season.
Game One: The Knights kicked off their day with a game one win of a two game series versus Rowan College Burlington County (RCBC). The Knights got a solid effort on the mound from Freshman Shane Kittila (Warwick, RI) who went four innings, not allowing an earned run while striking out six. The effort was solid enough to get a win and allowing the Knights bats to take over and put runs on the board.
The Knights offense was a balanced attack as five hitters picked up two hits each and five batters also collected an RBI a piece. Mike Santos (Cranston, RI) batted in the leadoff spot for the Knights and the freshman proved he could do the job there. Santos went two for three with two doubles while scoring a run and knocking in two for the Knights. Dylan Brooks (Lookeba, OK), Ernesto Figueroa (Providence, RI) and Ramiel Rodriguez (Providence, RI) all recorded two hits and an RBI a piece for the Knights Brooks had a double while Figueroa added a stolen base and Rodriguez tripled for one of his hits.
Heiker Feliz (Providence, RI) pitched a scoreless inning for the Knights to finish out the game and pick up the save without allowing a hit and striking out two.
Game Two: The Knights and RCBC played another tight game in the second game of the double-header. The Knights jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after five innings then only to see their lead squandered as RCBC scored five in the sixth to take a two run lead. RCBC scored another in the top of the seventh for an insurance run they would surely need. The Knights took the game to the wire as they scored two runs in the bottom of the last inning to get within one. The Knights did not complete the comeback though and fell 6-5.
Dylan Brooks (Lookeba, OK) and Omaury Cortoreal (Providence, RI) both had two hits and two RBI’s a piece to fuel the Knights offense. Brooks’ hits were both loud doubles while he walked once to reach base a total of three times on the day. Edwin Pichardo (Hollywood, FL) also collected two hits while Mike Santos (Cranston, RI) scored two runs and collected a hit.
Game Three: In the third and final game on Tuesday for the Knights, they faced off against Rollins College (JV). It was a high scoring game where pitchers just could not get anyone out. Rollins jumped ahead early with a quick four spot in the first, only to be followed by a four run top of the second for the Knights. Innings four through seven were quiet, but then the teams combined for five runs in the eighth and ninth. Rollins kept getting the first punches though so the Knights were playing catchup the whole game which does not usually lead to wins. Knights took the loss 10-7.
Freshman Austin Davis (Hollywood, FL) picked the right time to hit his first home run of the season as he connected on a pitch with the bases loaded for the Knights first grand slam of the year. Robert Paulino (Mirimar, FL) collected one hit and one run for the Knights while Edison Mercado (Providence, RI) had two hits and two runs scored for the Knights.
