Warwick, R.I. – January 11, 2016: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball teams hosted three teams for the 2016 CCRI Basketball Invitational over the weekend: the Vikings of Mercer County Community College from West Windsor Township, NJ, the Cougars of Genesee Community College from Batavia, NY and the Pointers of UConn-Avery Point from Groton, CT. On Saturday the Lady Knights faced the Vikings of Mercer County. CCRI defeated the Vikings 56-37.With the victory, the Lady Knights improve to 10-10 on the season. In the first game of the tournament, the Pointers of UConn-Avery Point defeated the Cougars of Genesee 72-61.
The Lady Knights controlled the game form the opening tip taking a 9-0 lead which they extended to 22-4 by the end of the first quarter. CCRI kept the Vikings in check in the second quarter once again allowing just eight points while extending their lead to 23 points to go into halftime leading 35-12. Mercer did play much better in the second half but at that point, the outcome was set with the Lady Knights winning by the final count of 56-37.
Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Kennethah Harden (Roosevelt, NY) who charted her 16th double-double in 21 games scoring a game-high 18 points with 11 rebounds while adding four steals two blocked shots and an assist. Helping Harden was forward Maritza Gustave (Fall River, MA) who scored 14 points including four 3-pointers with six rebounds, four steals and two assists and Co-Captain Lyric Artis (Albany, NY) added 13 points, eight rebounds, three blocked shots and three assists.
The Lady Knights will face the Cougars of Genesee Community College Sunday at 12noon in their final game of the 2016 CCRI Basketball Invitational.
