Warwick, R.I. – February 29, 2016: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to Orange County Community College in Middletown, NY to play in the Region XXI/XV Tournament. The seeding for the Tournament was as follows: #1 Dean (19-4 overall, 5-1 in region); #2 CCRI (14-16* overall, 3-3 in region) (*win tiebreaker based on overall record); #3 Monroe (9-18 overall, 3-3 in region); and #4 Orange (13-13 overall, 1-5 in region). The Lady Knights lost to Monroe College in the semi-final 50-46. With the loss CCRI ends their season with a 14-17 record. With the victory Monroe advanced to play Dean College who had beaten Orange County Community College in the second semi-final. Dean College beat Monroe College in the Championship Game 74-64. Dean College (22-4) advances to the District N/O Championship where they will face Union College (23-5). Both teams have qualified for the National Tournament at Johnson County CC in Overland, KS whichever team wins will be the higher seed (District N Champion).
In the first game of the regional the Lady Knights faced-off against Monroe College for the third time this season. CCRI won the first meeting 70-67 in overtime while Monroe won the second meeting 65-44. Both team battled closely in the first quarter with Monroe taking a one point lead 17-16. Monroe extended their lead to eight points by halftime 30-22 by outscoring CCRI 13-6. But after the halftime intermission the Lady Knights came out with renewed vigor and took the game to the Mustangs playing smothering defense allowing just four points while scoring 14. CCRI was led by Kennethah Harden (Roosevelt, NY) who scored six of the 14 for CCRI while also getting 3-pointers from Lyric Artis (Albany, NY) and Alexis Antonacci (Plainview, NY). The 14-4 quarter by CCRI gave the Lady Knights a 36-34 lead going into the fourth.
Monroe College scored first in the fourth quarter to tie the game 36-36 then got a 3-pointer from Camilla Kilinc to take a 39-36 lead. The Lady Knights battled back with a basket from Kennethah Harden and a 3-pointer from Captain Haley Beausoleil (Plainfield, CT) to take a 41-39 lead. The Mustangs pulled ahead again with two free throws and then a basket from Destine Green to take a 43-41 lead. CCRI’s Harden answered to tie the game again at 43-43. However, Monroe closed the game with a 7-3 run to win by the final count of 50-46.
Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Kennethah Harden who charted her 24th double-double in her 31 games played this year scoring a team-high 18 points with 16 rebounds. Harden finished her historic freshman season with a single-season record 396 rebounds besting the former record of Nyjah Porcher (343) by 53 rebounds. In addition, she has scored 576 points ranking her No. 20 on the CCRI All-time scoring list. Also helping CCRI was Alexis Antonacci who added who scored 10 points including two 3-pointers with five assists and Lyric Artis added seven points, seven rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots.
The Community College of Rhode Island, New England’s largest comprehensive community college, enrolls nearly 18,000 students in credit courses and thousands more in non-credit and job training classes.
