Warwick, R.I. – December 2, 2015: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Warriors of Massasoit Community College from Brockton, MA for a Region XXI non-league game Tuesday evening at the Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse. The Lady Knights defeated the Warriors 74-45. With the victory the Lady Knights improve to 6-6 overall and 2-3 in Region XXI play.
The Lady Knights jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead on a 3-pointer from Mackenzie Brayman (North Stonington, CT) and later extended the lead to 18-5 on a 3-pointer from Alexis Antonacci (Plainview, NY). However, Massasoit went on a ferocious run 15-1 run led by Natascha Elias who scored nine points including two 3-pointers to take a 20-19 lead. Kennethah Harden made a basket as time expired in the quarter to give CCRI the 21-20 lead to end the first. The Lady Knights played more consistently in the second quarter to take a 37-26 lead led by six points from Briana Gerena (East Hartford, CT) including two 3-pointers and six from Kennethah Harden (Roosevelt, NY).
CCRI kept the pressure on Massasoit in the second half extending their lead to 22 points with tremendous defensive pressure allowing just seven third quarter points while scoring 18. Leading the charge for CCRI in the second half was Maritza Gustave (Fall River, MA) who scored all 11 of her points in the half while commanding the boards and playing lock down defense. The Lady Knights finished strong outscoring the Warriors 19-12 in the final quarter to win by the final count of 74-45.
Leading the way for CCRI was Kennethah Harden with 20 points, nine rebounds and a blocked shot and Briana Gerena added 19 points including five 3-pointers. Also playing very well was Maritza Gustave with her first career double-double consisting of 11 points and a team-high 12 rebounds adding two stelas and a blocked shot and Mackenzie Brayman also played very good defense while scoring in double-figures with 12 points including two 3-pointers. Rounding out the balanced attack for CCRI was Alexis Antonacci with seven points while dishing out a career-high 10 assists and Haley Beausoleil (Plainfield, CT) added five points, with a career-high seven assists and eight rebounds.
The next games for the Lady Knights will be this weekend when they travel to New York to play the very potent No. 15 ranked (NJCAA DI poll) and undefeated (6-0) Avengers of ASA College at 5:00pm.
