Warwick, R.I. – December 2, 2015: The CCRI Knights Men’s basketball team hosted Region XXI division rival Massasoit Community College on Tuesday night in their first matchup of the season. The Knights were able to come away with the win by the score of 80-59. The win improved the Knights season record to 5-3 and their Region XXI record to 4-2.
The Knights played a complete game Tuesday night as they led from start to finish while keeping a double digit lead the whole game. The Knights were focused on defense from the get go and that led to an early 21-9 lead only a few minutes in. The Knights stayed steady through the first half and went into the break with a 42-29 advantage.
The Knights defense was fueled by a number of blocked shots, most of which came from Tri-Captain Edvaldo Ferreira (Cape Verde), who had four and sophomore Jordan Grant (New London, CT), who had three. The duo’s shot blocking ability led to fast breaks by the Knights and some quick easy hoops that helped push the lead.
In the second half the Knights started pulling away and took a 20 point lead with about nine minutes to go. The lead didn’t drop below that 20 point margin for the rest of the game and the Knights were able to coast away with a 23 point victory.
Adrian La Fleur (Sydney, Australia) led the Knights with 20 points including a 5-7 shooting performance from the 3-point line. Elijah Vazquez (Woonsocket, RI) also was locked in from deep as he hit four of five 3-point attempts on his way to 14 points. Vazquez also chipped in five rebounds and two assists.
Ferreira, along with his four blocks had a solid double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while also contributing three assists and a steal. Grant added 10 points and five boards to go along with his three blocks. Josh Mann (Detroit, MI) hauled in 10 rebounds for the Knights to go along with six points.
Head Coach Rick Harris had this to say after his teams win, “We continue to be a work in progress, but we did some great things tonight. Having our big man (Edvaldo Ferreira) back tonight really helped our defense. But we have to stay focused as we have a big test on Saturday.
