Warwick, R.I. – April 19, 2016: The CCRI Lady Knights softball team hosted the Warriors of Massasoit Community College from Brockton, MA for a Region XXI league doubleheader. The Lady Knights swept the Warriors 20-0 and 16-5. With the sweep the Lady Knights improve to 9-7 on the season and begin Region XXI play with a 2-0 record.
In the circle for the Lady Knights getting the start was their ace Courtney Sheridan (Warwick, RI) who made quick work of the Warriors as she spun her first collegiate no-hitter! Sheridan was on point, though she did allow four base runners, two on walks and two via error on routine infield fielder’s choices. She threw five hitless frames with four strikeouts and finished the game in style with a weak pop out to herself for the easy 20-0 victory.
Once again the Lady Knights displayed why they have a .361 team batting average and are ranked No. 29 as a team in batting average by the NJCAA in Division II. CCRI sprayed 19 hits over four innings to support Sheridan’s dominance in the circle.
The Lady Knights were led offensively by shortstop Bella Malvinni (Westerly, RI) who went 4-4 with a double, three RBI, a stolen base, and two runs scored and Tri-Captain Erica Jewett (Coventry, RI) had two hits a double and a triple with two walks, three RBI and four runs scored. Also making a big impact was Tri-Captain Jenna Urso (West Warwick, RI) going 3-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, Maddy Cooper (Pawtucket, RI) had three hits including a double with two RBI and two runs scored. Adding to the big game was Sam Archambault (North Smithfield, RI) with two hits, two walks, two RBI, two stolen bases, and four runs scored and Meg Rousseau (Richmond, RI) had two hits, two RBI and a run scored while Kristina Rodriguez (North Kingstown, RI), Mikayla Fernandez (Burrillville, RI) and Jenna Beauchamp (Warwick, RI) each added a hit apiece to the 19-hit Lady Knights’ attack.
In the circle for the Lady Knights getting the start was Tri-Captain Jess Spargo who pitched very well to secure her third victory of the year. Spargo threw five plus innings allowing six runs, only three of them earned on six hits, walking five and striking out four. Spargo was relieved by fellow Tri-Captain Erica Jewett who threw one inning of relief walking one and striking out one.
Once again the Lady Knights hit, a lot, that’s what they do. The 15-hit barrage was led by Kristina Rodriguez with four hits, four runs scored, five RBIs and a stolen base. Matching that RBI total with five also was Tri-Captain Jenna Urso who added a double, a triple and an inside-the-park Home Run with two runs scored. Bella Malvinni added two hits, three runs scored and three stolen bases while Maddy Cooper added two hits including a double with an RBI and a run scored. Also helping CCRI was Erica Jewett who had one hit a walk-off two-run inside-the-park Home Run while Jess Spargo, Kim Barker (Narragansett, RI) and Natalie Gallucci (Coventry, RI) each added hits to cap the 34-hit and 36-run outburst for CCRI.
