Warwick, R.I. – April 18, 2016: The CCRI Lady Knights softball team hosted the Huskies of Northeastern University club team on Saturday for their Home Opener. The Lady Knights swept the Huskies 13-5 and 7-6. With the sweep the Lady Knights’ record is back to .500 at 7-7 overall.
In the circle for the Lady Knights in the first game was freshman Courtney Sheridan (Warwick, RI) who pitched very well against a very potent Northeastern line-up. Sheridan threw five strong innings allowing five earned runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out six Huskies’ batters. Sheridan cruised through the first two innings scoreless but gave-up a lead-off triple that scored in the third which made the score 8-1 CCRI. Northeaster mounted a fierce rally in the fourth as their first four batters reached on hits and they were able to score four runs but an impressive double play ended the inning. Huskies third batter Jessy Nelson flied out to right field and the Lady Knights turned a double-play as right fielder Jenna Urso (West Warwick, RI) made the catch and fired a missile to catcher Sam Archambault (North Smithfield, RI) to halt the Huskies’ rally with the score 8-6 CCRI. The Lady Knights added two in the bottom of the fourth and three in the fifth to give Sheridan her fourth victory of the year.
Offensively for the Lady Knights the bats stayed hot with 18 hits in the first game. CCRI charted six runs in the second inning, two in the fourth and three in the fifth to cruise to the 13-5 victory. The Lady Knights batted around the order on the second inning with big hits coming from sophomore catcher Sam Archambault and designated player Maddy Cooper (Pawtucket, RI) with 2-RBI doubles while Kristina Rodriguez (North Kingstown, RI) and Tri-Captain Jess Spargo (Westerly, RI) added RBI singles. Tri-Captain Jenna Urso (West Warwick, RI) added a 2-RBI single I the bottom of the fourth inning to give CCRI a 10-5 lead and the big hit of the day came in the bottom of the fifth with a towering 3-run walk-off Home Run off the bat of Maddy Cooper to give CCRI the 13-5 victory.
Game one offensive leaders included: Cooper with four hits including a double and home run with six RBIs and three runs scored, Kristian Rodriguez with three hits and RBI and two runs scored and Meghan Rousseau (Richmond, RI) with three hits including an RBI and a run scored. Also helping the Lady Knights was Sam Archambault and Jenna Urso with two hits, two RBI and a run scored and Jess Spargo added two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Erica Jewett (Coventry, RI) added a hit, two RBI and a run scored and Mikayla Fernandez (Burrillville, RI) added a hit and run scored.
In the circle for the Lady Knights getting the start was Tri-Captain Jess Spargo who was not helped by her defense early but she managed to maintain her composure and get CCRI out of the early jams. Northeastern got four runs in the first inning thanks in large part to three first inning CCRI errors which made three of the runs unearned. Northeastern added runs in the third and fifth but Spargo minimized the damage. Spargo pitched strongly through five innings allowing six runs, only three earned, on seven hits, walking four and striking out for batters to pick-up her second victory of the year. Tri-Captain Erica Jewett (Coventry, RI) came into the game in relief and was lights out allowing no runs on just two hits, and striking out three batters to earn her first save of the season.
The Lady Knights trailed 6-3 going into the fifth inning when the exploded for four runs. Jenna Urso led the inning off with a triple and scored on a RBI double from Cooper. Jess Spargo added an RBI single and Meg Rousseau capped the inning with an RBI single to put CCRI ahead by the score of 7-6 the score they would win by as Erica Jewett was able to pitch two clean innings in relief to secure the CCRI victory.
Once again the Lady Knights were dominant offensively with 13 hits which gave them total of 31 for the day! Leading the way in this game was sophomore Meg Rousseau with three hits including a double with the game-winning RBI and run scored and Maddy Cooper was 3-4 with three doubles an RBI and run scored. Also having a break-out game was Jenna Beauchamp (Warwick, RI) with two hits including her first career Home Run an RBI and two runs scored while Tri-Captain Erica Jewett had two hits and RBI and run scored. Tri-Captain Jess Spargo had a hit, RBI and runs scored, Jenna Urso added a triple, RBI and run scored and Abby Martinelli (West Greenwich, RI) an RBI double.
The next games for the Lady Knights will be Monday when they host the Warriors of Massasoit Community College for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30pm at Winslow Park in Warwick.
