Warwick, R.I. – April 26, 2016: The CCRI Knights baseball team hosted Mitchell College JV on Thursday afternoon on Fell Field. The Knights once again played a close game but in the end came away with a 3-2 victory. The win puts the Knights at 11-9 on the year.
The Knights did not waste much time getting on the board as they did so in the bottom of the first. Co-Captain Brandon Escalante (Pembroke, FL) took a walk to start it off for the Knights and then raced home on a loud triple to deep center from Austin Davis (Hollywood, FL).Davis was stranded on third though as the Knights went into the second inning up 1-0.
Mitchell responded with a run in the top of the second inning to tie the game up at one. CCRI got the run right back though in the bottom of the inning on a mini two out rally. Mario Negueruela (Hialeah, FL) singled with two outs and then was able to hustle home on another run scoring triple from the Knights, this time off the bat of Robert Paulino (Mirimar, FL). Knights led 2-1 after two.
The third inning once again saw both teams put a run on the scoreboard. Mitchell scored in the top half of the inning on a sac fly to tie it at two. In the bottom half, Dylan Brooks (Lookeba, OK) launched his fourth home run of the season, which would turn out to be the game winner, to give the Knights a 3-2 lead.
The scoring ended there for both teams as the pitchers started to dominate. For the Knights, Korey Fijal (Johnston, RI) started the game and had a very solid outing. Fijal went six innings only surrendering two runs on four hits. He was able to strike out six batters on his way to a win which pushed him to 2-0 on the season. Heiker Feliz (Providence, RI) took the ball and pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth inning before handing the ball over to Randy Garcia (Providence, RI) who pitched a scoreless ninth and picked up the save for the Knights.
The Knights only managed five hits in the game, but three of those went for extra bases with the two triples from Davis and Paulino and the third being the game winning home run from Brooks.
