The CCRI Men’s Soccer team lost their home opener to the No. 12 ranked (NJCAA DI Soccer Poll) ASA Avengers Saturday afternoon, surrendering three unanswered goals in the second half to fall 3-1. With the loss, the Knights fell to 0-1-1 on the season.
CCRI once again got off to a good start in Saturday’s game, with Junior Robert (Providence, RI) capitalizing off of an ASA defender’s mistake, collecting the ball and firing it past the keeper to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. CCRI Head Coach Gabe Toro used a number of substitutions in the first half to try and keep fresh legs in the game on a hot and humid day. That strategy proved to be beneficial early on, as the Knights took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
However, the heat started to catch up with CCRI in the second half. A mental error about 20 minutes into the second half allowed ASA to tie the game 1-1. The Knights then had an own goal to give the Avengers a 2-1 lead, before ASA buried another with just a few minutes remaining to put the contest out of reach for CCRI.
“We (the coaching staff) are working on overall team fitness and the weather today tested all of our players to the max,” Coach Toro said. “I’m trying to make strategic moves with players this weekend to keep them working on improving their fitness, but also balancing playing time because two games in two days is a challenge for any athlete.”
The Knights will be back in action Sunday, when they welcome Essex County College (NJ) to the Flanagan Campus in Lincoln. The two teams will square off at 2:00 p.m., after the conclusion of the women’s game at 12:00 p.m.
