The men’s soccer team won its second straight game Thursday afternoon, burying two second-half goals to shutout Springfield Tech 2-0. With the victory, the Knights improved to 2-4-1 on the season and 2-1-1 in Region XXI play.
Despite having several opportunities in the first half, including a hit crossbar by Trevor Lopes (Cumberland, RI) and a number of quality chances for Evan Gaudreau (Jamestown, RI), CCRI and Springfield Tech took a 0-0 tie into the half.
In the second half, however, the Knights were able to capitalize on their chances. After Sindio Freitas (Cape Verde) and Brandon Silvestri (Warwick, RI) put together a series of nice passes, Freitas crossed the ball and Nathan Dacosta (Warwick, RI) volleyed the ball past the keeper, giving CCRI a 1-0 lead. Junior Robert (Providence, RI) scored his third goal in his last two games later in the half, pressuring a defender and finishing off an outstanding individual effort to give the Knights a 2-0 lead.
Head Coach Gabe Toro commented that Logan Corcoran (Greenville, RI), Jackson Acciaoli (Greenville, RI), Brandon Iannelli (North Kingstown, RI), and Adam Coutu (Moosup, CT), who is just about back to 100% after returning from an injury, all played well defensively. CCRI also gave Iannelli a chance to move up in the formation to combine with the midfielders.
“Having players back from injury helps when we want to try new things with some of our skilled players,” Toro said. “We’re looking forward to keeping this positive energy rolling to look for our third win of the season.”
The Knights will now return home to play Suffolk County CC at the Flanagan Campus in Lincoln on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
