The CCRI Lady Knights’ soccer team hosted the No. 3 ranked (NJCAA DI poll) Mustangs of Monroe College form New Rochelle, NY Saturday at the CCRI soccer complex in Lincoln. The Lady Knights lost to the internationally talent-laden Mustangs 5-0. With the loss the Lady Knights record falls to 7-4-1 on the season.
Things didn’t start out the way CCRI would like as Monroe was awarded a corner kick in the first minute of play. CCRI goalkeeper Jenn Kilburn (Norton, MA) made the initial save but the ball got away as conditions were wet and slippery. The Mustang’s Melanie Formosa was right there to tuck in the rebound giving Monroe a quick 1-0 advantage. Ten minutes later Gabriella Braga got loose in the CCRI 18 yard box and scored Monroe’s second goal of the match. Braga duplicated her efforts again ten minutes later giving Monroe a commanding 3-0 halftime advantage.
As second half play began the Mustangs continued to dominate play. CCRI’s defense was peppered and pressured all day. In the 23rd minute of play Monroe’s Gemma Craine was taken down from behind in the CCRI defensive 18 yard box prompting the referee to award a penalty kick. CCRI’s keeper Jenn Kilburn once again made the initial stop on Craine’s shot but the ball rebounded right back to Craine who placed the ball into the CCRI net making the score 4-0. With about eight minutes left in the match Monroe’s Lina Dominguez rounding out the scoring with the Mustang’s 5th goal on the day to give Monroe the 5-0 victory.
Head Coach Dennis Grassini commented after the game. “By far this is the best team we have seen this season! We knew going in that this was going to be a very tough match for us today. The only bright spot we had today was Jenn Kilburn stopping the penalty shot but unfortunately for her and our team the ball came out straight back to the kicker. Monroe is not ranked No. 3 in the country for nothing. They are just loaded with talent from top to bottom and we just simply could not compete with them today. They are a very solid and talented team.”
The next game for the Lady Knights will be Thursday the 16th when they will host the very formidable Pride of Springfield College JV squad at 4:00pm at the CCRI soccer complex in Lincoln.
