Edwards leads Lady Knights over Bunker Hill 71-61!

The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to Boston, MA to play the Bulldogs of Bunker Hill CC for their season and Region XXI opener. The Lady Knights defeated the Bulldogs 71-61. With the victory the Lady Knights begin the season 1-0 overall and in Region XXI play.

The Lady Knights controlled the entire game form the opening tip taking a 9-0 lead to begin the game. They extended the lead to 11 points 21-10 on a basket from Amber Edwards (Boston, MA) half way through the half. The Lady Knights would control the rest of the half as they took a 17-point lead into halftime on the 3-point basket by Lyric Artis (Albany, NY) making the score 38-21 at the break. In the second half the Lady Knights led by as many as 22 points before Bunker Hill would make the game closer as they amassed a comeback to lose by just 10 points, 71-61, after CCRI already had the game in hand.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was sophomore Amber Edwards who had an excellent game in her hometown of Boston, MA scoring 21 points with eight rebounds, three assists and four steals. Edwards was helped by freshman Lyric Artis who added 18 points with two rebounds and a blocked shot. Also having a great season opener was sophomore point guard Jesse Ossian (Chandler AZ) with 10 points, a game-high eight assists with nine rebounds and a steal. Sophomore forward LaShana Tolliver (Watervliet, NY) began her CCRI career with a double-double of 10 points and game-high 15 rebounds while adding four assists and a steal while freshman forward Anna McDaniel (Taunton, MA) added 12 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots.

The next game for the Lady Knights will be Tuesday the 11th when they will host the Tigers of Roxbury Community College from Roxbury, MA for a Region XXI non-league game at 5:00pm.

The Community College of Rhode Island, New England’s largest comprehensive community college, enrolls nearly 18,000 students in credit courses and thousands more in non-credit and job training classes. Its athletic program boasts 12 varsity programs and an academic support program for all student-athletes.
