Warwick, R.I. – December 29, 2014: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to Brooklyn, NY to compete in the 2nd Annual ASA Lady Avenger Holiday Classic on Sunday. In their first game of the classic the Lady Knights faced the Red Hawks of LaGuardia Community College from Queens, NY. The Lady Knights defeated the Red Hawks 73-53. With the victory the Lady Knights improve to 5-10 on the season.
The Red Hawks took the early advantage in the game jumping out to a quick 7-0 lead. The Lady Knights battled back to tie the game 9-9 on a basket from Tri-Captain Jesse Ossian (Chandler, AZ). LaGuardia took the lead back but CCRI answered and tied the game back at 19-19 on a basket from Tri-Captain LaShana Tolliver (Albany, NY). From there the Lady Knights closed out the half with a 19-10 run to go into the break leading 38-29.
In the second half LaGuardia again jumped out to a quick start scoring the first five points to cut the CCRI lead to four points 38-34. From there CCRI played stifling defense and 3-pointers shooting from Lyric Artis (Albany, NY) to garner a 10 point lead 48-38 over the Red Hawks and never looked back as the Lady Knights would increase their lead and eventually go onto win by the final count of 73-53.
Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Tri-Captain Jesse Ossian with a double-double consisting of a game-high 18 points with 11 rebounds while adding five steals and an assist followed by Tri-Captain LaShana Tolliver who also charted a double-double with 14 points and game-high 15 rebounds while adding four assists, two blocked shots and two steals. Also helping CCRI was Haley Beausoleil (Plainfield, CT) starting her first game for the Lady Knights added 10 points, seven rebounds, six steals, and two assists, Lyric Artis added 18 points including three 3-pointers with a block and two steals, and Tri-Captain Amber Edwards (Boston, MA) added 13 points, a game-high six assists with two steals and three rebounds.
The next game for the Lady Knights will be Monday the 29th when CCRI will face the very potent Division I Panthers of Baltimore City Community College at 4pm in the 2nd Annual ASA Lady Avenger Holiday Classic.
The Community College of Rhode Island, New England's largest comprehensive community college, enrolls nearly 18,000 students in credit courses and thousands more in non-credit and job training classes.
