Warwick, R.I. – December 18, 2014: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Lady Seawolves of Southern Maine Community College from South Portland, ME for a game Wednesday evening. The Lady Knights defeated the Lady Seawolves 76-55. With the victory the Lady Knights improve to 4-8 on the season.
The Lady Knights came out of the gates on fire as they quickly jumped ahead of the Seawolves 9-2 and kept the pressure on southern Maine throughout the first half with excellent defense and offensive execution to take a comfortable 38-21 lead into halftime. In the second half the Lady Knights had to weather the storm as the Seawolves battled back with a very deep bench and tremendous height to cut the CCRI lead to just nine points with the score 36-45 with 13:06 remaining in the game. However, the Lady Knights go their second wind and were able to extend their lead up to 20 points 68-48 with just 4:10 remaining in the game after two free throws from Tri-Captain Jesse Ossian (Chandler, AZ). From there CCRI cruised to the 76-55 victory.
Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Tri-Captain LaShana Tolliver (Albany, NY) with her sixth double-double of the season with game-highs in points with 20 and rebounds with 14 to go with three assists, three steals and four blocked shots. Tolliver was assisted by Tri-Captain Amber Edwards (Boston, MA) who charted her fifth double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds to go with a game-high six assists and two steals and Tri-Captain Jesse Ossian added 17 points and eight rebounds with three assists and three steals. Rounding out the CCRI balanced attack was freshman Lyric Artis (Albany NY) scoring 18 points including a game-high three 3-pointers with two assists and Tiana Cruz (South Kingstown, RI) contributed six points 11 rebounds and an assist.
The next games for the Lady Knights will be this weekend when they travel to Monroe College in New Rochelle, NY to play in the Monroe College Winter Tip-off Tournament. On Friday at 5pm the Lady Knights will face Frederick Community College from Frederick, MD and Saturday the will face the hosting Mustangs of Monroe College eat 2pm.
The Community College of Rhode Island, New England's largest comprehensive community college, enrolls nearly 18,000 students in credit courses and thousands more in non-credit and job training classes. Its athletic program boasts 12 varsity programs and an academic support program for all student-athletes.
