Warwick, R.I. –December 15, 2014: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to Batavia, NY to compete in the Genesee Community College Cougar Holiday Classic over the weekend. In their first game the Lady Knights faced the undefeated (10-0) the No. 17 ranked (NJCAA DII poll) Thunderwolves of Niagara County Community College from Sanborn, NY. The Lady Knights lost to the Thunderwolves 70-56. With the loss the Lady Knights record drops to 3-7 on the season.
The Lady Knights knew they were going to be in for a tough game against the undefeated and highly ranked Thunderwolves. The Lady Knights kept the game close throughout the first half trailing just 24-27 on a basket by Tri-Captain Amber Edwards (Boston, MA). The Thunderwolves extended the lead to eight points 34-26 but the Lady Knights battled back before the end of the half to cut the lead to four points 35-31 on a 3-pointer by Tri-Captain Jesse Ossian (Chandler, AZ) to end the half. The second half was not as good for CCRI as Niagara would extend their lead to as much as 25 points. The Lady Knights did finish the game strong scoring the final 11 points to lose by the final score of 70-56.
Leading the way for CCRI was Tri-Captain Amber Edwards with a game-high 20 points, eight rebounds, a game-high five assists and added a blocked shot. Edwards was helped by Tri-Captain LaShana Tolliver (Albany, NY) who charted a monster double-double with 16 points while ripping down a career-high 20 rebounds and Tri-Captain Jesse Ossian added 12 points including two 3-pointers with nine rebounds and four assists.
The Lady Knights will face the host Cougars of Genesee Community College Sunday at 11am in their final game of the Cougar Holiday Classic.
The Community College of Rhode Island, New England's largest comprehensive community college, enrolls nearly 18,000 students in credit courses and thousands more in non-credit and job training classes. Its athletic program boasts 12 varsity programs and an academic support program for all student-athletes.
