Warwick, R.I. – April 13, 2015: The CCRI Lady Knights softball team hosted the Warriors of Massasoit Community College from Brockton, MA for their home opening Region XXI league doubleheader at Winslow Park Field 1 in Apponaug. The Lady Knights defeated the Warrior 8-5 and 9-1. With the sweep the Lady Knights even their record at 2-2 overall on the season while moving to 2-0 in Region XXI play.
Co-Captain Taylor Butler (North Kingstown, RI) was in the circle for the first game of the doubleheader. Butler struck out the first batter in a 1-2-3 top of the first. In the bot of the first Jess Spargo (Westerly, RI) singled with two out and stole second. Ashley Spear (Harrisville, RI) walked. Spargo and Spear both advanced on a passed ball. Spargo then scored on second passed ball. Maxine DeLuise (Warwick, RI) then stroked an RBI triple to score Spear. Four of the five of Warriors' runs came in the top of the second to give them a 4-2 lead. The Lady Knights Jess Spargo led-off the bottom of the 3rd with a triple and later scored DeLuise recorded her second hit of the game with a single and scored with the bases loaded when Jess Brosnahan (Warwick, RI) was hit to tie the score at 4-4. In the bottom of the fourth with Butler on second and Spargo on first Freshman Jenna Urso (West Warwick, RI) pinch hit for Ashley Spear and hit a clutch two-RBIs triple in her very first at bat of the season. Urso scored on DeLuise's third hit of the game which was an RBI double to give CCRI a 7-4 lead. Massasoit scored once in the fifth to make the score 7-5 but CCRI answered with another in the sixth on a RBI from Erica Jewett (Coventry, RI).
Sophomore Co-Captain Taylor Butler picked-up her first win of the year throwing seven strong innings allowing four earned runs, walking one and striking out eight batters. Battery-mate Maxine DeLuise did her part by going 4-4 with a double, triple, and two RBIs while Freshman Jenna Urso went 1- 2 with a two-RBIs triple.
Freshman Erica Jewett was in the circle for the second game of the doubleheader. Jewett pitched a gem to pick up her first collegiate victory, allowing just a single hit and one unearned run while striking out six batters over five dominant innings.
CCRI came out swinging in the first inning scoring five runs. Meghan Rousseau (Richmond, RI) led-off with a walk followed by Jess Spargo who hit her first career collegiate Homerun with one out, a two- run shot to put the Lady Knights on the board. The homer was followed by a singles from Spear and DeLuise, followed by an RBI single by from Jewett to help her own cause and the scoring was capped by a Brosnahan two-out RBI double. CCRI was not done in the tacking-on three more times: Rousseau led-off with a single followed by Butler who reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt. Spear had a one-out RBI single which was followed by DeLuise's second hit of the game, a two-RBI single. Up 8-0 going into the third CCRI cruised to victory with Massasoit adding a run in the fourth as Jewett’s only walk came into score but CCRI win the game by the Mercy Rule in the fifth as DeLuise led-off with a double, her third hit of the game, and 7th of the day! DeLuise was followed by a single from Jewett and Jenna Urso once again had the game-winning RBI scoring DeLuise.
The next games for the Lady Knights will be Thursday April the 16th when they travel to Franklin, MA to play the Bulldogs of Dean College in another Region XXI doubleheader showdown beginning at 3:30pm.
