09.29.13

OramPaige Oram

Warwick, R.I. – September 30, 2013:  The CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team continued their play in the NHTI Invite on Saturday and went into the playoff round as the top seed and defeated Paul Smith’s College in the Semi-finals 25-7 and 25-15. The Lady Knights then faced-off against host school NHTI in the Final and defeated them convincingly 25-14 and 25-10.  CCRI standouts Alyssa Salinas (Corpus Christi, TX) and Omayra Corchado (Isabela, PR) earn All-Tournament Team honors while CCRI Tri-Captain Janny Cabrera (Providence, RI) earns Tournament MVP!

Semi Finals vs. Paul Smith College

CCRI- 25 PSC- 7 and CCRI- 25 PSC-15

Having seen Paul Smith College already, the Lady Knights were fully prepared for what PSC could bring to the table. CCRI knew their weaknesses and strengths. Being tired and with little rest, the Lady Knights wanted to win this game quickly and decisively. The Lady Knights pushed through minimizing their errors, being a force at the net and back line.

Janny Cabrera led the team with 10 kills and 2.5 blocks and Omayra Corchado, who backed Janny up with five kills, two aces, and eight digs in the match. Jincy Phann (Cranston, RI), Chelsea O’Connor (Pawtucket, RI) and Haley Greenwood (Goldsboro, NC) both had seven digs a piece, while O’Connor also added four aces. Delyn Pizzaro (homestead, FL) had one block of her own and Alyssa Salinas rounded-out the team’s top performers with two aces, 19 assist, three kills, and 12 digs.

Finals vs. NHTI
CCRI- 25 NHTI- 14 and CCRI- 25 NHTI- 10

Both teams were very tired, but each wanted “the gold” just as badly. CCRI went into this game knowing NHTI was not going to just hand them the victory, however NHTI could not stop the fast offense of CCRI. Janny Cabrera finished the game with an impressive 14 kills hitting at 70% with no hitting errors, 4.5 blocks and seven digs. Omayra Corchado followed her teammate with eight kills and seven digs. Haley Greenwood had two aces and nine digs. While Alyssa Salinas finished the match with 23 assists, an ace and five digs, Chelsea O’Connor had two aces and two kills and Jincy Phann added four digs a block and an assist.

Last week’s NJCAA Division II player of the week Janny Cabrera finished as the Tournament MVP to no surprise to anyone who saw the Invite. In addition, Alyssa Salinas and Omayra Corchado were selected for the All-Tournament Team. “To see three of your players receive theses honors was a very proud moment. These ladies practice very hard on and off the court. They are a strong team together and all I see are good things for the CCRI Lady Knights…One Team. One Voice.” added a happy Coach Amaral after the Tournament.

The Lady Knights have a little over a week off and then will, travel back to NHTI in Concord, NH for another match beginning at 7:00pm.
