Lady Knights drop two to open Florida road trip

The CCRI Lady Knights’ softball team traveled to the National Training Center in Clermont, FL for their annual spring training trip. The Lady Knights began their season with a split doubleheader paying their first game versus the Monarchs of Macomb College from Clinton, MI and their second versus the Challengers of Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) from Cleveland, OH. The Lady Knights lost the first game to Macomb 8-0 and the second to Tri-C 12-4. With the losses CCRI begins the season 0-2.

Game 1
CCRI- 0 Macomb- 8 (5 innings mercy rule)

Macayla Paiva (West Greenwich, RI) pitched the first game of the season for us. Paiva pitched 3 1/3 innings giving up 11 hits and five runs with a walk. The first and second batters both singled in first and scored. Second inning Paiva allowed one hit. In the third inning started with a walk that ended up scoring. Freshman Jess Brosnahan (Warwick, RI) relieved Paiva with one out in the fourth after she gave up two singles and two doubles that allowed three runs to score. Brosnahan pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up two hits, two runs, and a walk while striking out two batters.

Offensively the Lady Knights generated five hits in their first outdoor action of the year. The CCRI offense was led by Co-Captain Alex Place (East Greenwich, RI) with a double. Place was helped by sophomore Sarah Deal (North Kingstown, RI), Ashley Spear (Harrisville, RI), Macayla Paiva, and Sam Archambeault (Harrisville, RI) who each had a single.

Game 2
CCRI- 4 Cuyahoga- 12

Taylor Butler (North Kingstown, RI) pitched the second game. Butler pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up 11 hits and 12 runs with two walks. The good news was that only three of the runs were earned. Two singles no runs in the first. The lead-off batter walked and scored in second and another run scored from a single and error. In the fourth inning, the lead-off batter reached on error, next batter singled then but caught stealing, the next batter singled to score a run. The next batter reached on error which led to a 2-run HR they was not hit over the fence but got past a diving CCRI outfielder. Two more runs scored in fifth due to errors and four runs scored in 6th only one earned also due to errors.

Offensively, CCRI started strong. Co-Captain Alex Place led-off with a single followed by Co-Captain Liz Coburn (Chepachet, RI) who also singled. Ashley Spear came to bat with two on and reached on an error that scored Place, from there Sarah Deal hit a 2-RBIs single scoring Coburn and Spear. The Lady Knights last run came when Spear singled and later scored on an RBI single by Deal.

Overall Sarah Deal led CCRI going 2-3 with three RBIs followed by Ashely Spear with a hit and RBI. They were helped by Freshman Alexis Jendzejec (West Greenwich, RI) with a double, while Alex Place, Liz Coburn and Taylor Butler each added a hit apiece.

The Lady Knights have not time to rest with two powerhouses lined-up on Monday March 10th: at 1:00pm the Lady Knights will face No. 14 ranked (NJCAA DII) Mott Community College from Flint, MI and at 5:00pm they will face No. 11 ranked (NJCAA DI) Lake Land College from Mattoon, IL.

The Community College of Rhode Island, New England’s largest comprehensive community college, enrolls nearly 18,000 students in credit courses and thousands more in non-credit and job training classes. Its athletic program boasts 12 varsity programs and an academic support program for all student-athletes.
