The CCRI Knights basketball team hosted the Falcons of Lackawanna College in the first round of the CCRI Invitational Tournament Saturday evening. The win raises CCRI's record to 12-6 while the Falcons drop to 5-10.
The Knights cruised through the first half taking a 51-36 lead into the break. The Knights put a 12-4 run together with seven minutes left in the game to hold off the Falcons after they fought their way back from a 15-point deficit. That run put the Knights up 81-70 and their free throw shooting iced the victory.
The Knights had five players score in double-figures led by Co-Captain Pat Marchand's (Cranston, RI) double-double of 26 and 13 rebounds. Co-Captain Anthony Jernigan (East Hartford, CT) chipped-in with 16 points and seven assists. Co-Captain Anthony Henry (Danbury, CT) added 14 points and eight boards while Rob Skinner (Winsted, CT) and Cody L'Heureux (North Smithfield, RI) both scored 10 for the Knights.
After the game Head Coach Rick Harris commented “Nice team victory versus a very good Division II opponent. We need to keep working on getting better every day and playing a full 40 minutes of basketball without having any lapses. We will definitely have to play a solid game versus a very tough Division I team like the Mustangs of Monroe tomorrow evening.”
The Knights will play Division I powerhouse Mustangs of Monroe College Sunday at 6:00pm in the final game of the 2014 CCRI Basketball Invitational.
