The CCRI baseball team erased an early deficit to cruise to a 19-5 win over Franklin Pierce University’s Junior Varsity team Thursday afternoon at Fell Field. With the win, the Knights improved their record to 6-3 on the season.
The Knights surrendered an early 2-0 lead, when Franklin Pierce manufactured four runs in the top of the second inning. However, the Ravens’ lead didn’t last long. In the bottom of the third, CCRI exploded for a 10-run inning, capped off by a grand slam by sophomore captain Jonathan Vazquez (Bridgeport, CT).
The Knights continue to rank in the top 10 in the country for offensive production, as CCRI belted 11 hits and drew eight walks in Thursday’s win. In addition to Vazquez’s homerun that sealed the game, Jake Tillman (Scituate, RI), Jake Waldren (Phoenix, AZ), and Zach Wood (Griswold, CT) each contributed with two hits apiece, with one of Wood’s hits one hopping the fence with the bases loaded for a bases clearing double.
Kory Lawrence (Woonsocket, RI) improved to 2-0 on the mound this season, throwing five strong innings, while allowing just one earned run, walking five and striking out three. Stew Braman (Middletown, RI) came on in the sixth to strike out the side and Rich Reo (Cranston, RI) breezed through the seventh inning to close out the game.
The Knights travel to New London, CT on Friday for a 4pm start against the Mitchell College Junior Varsity team.
