Springfield JV spoils Lady Knights’ Sophomore Day 3-2 on OT
The CCRI Lady Knights soccer team hosted the Pride of Springfield JV team for their final home game for the final home game of the 2012 season. It was also Sophomore Day, celebrating the final home game for sophomores: Tri-Captain Cait McGarry (Warwick, RI), Tri-Captain Jess McCaughey (Warwick, RI), Tri-Captain Britt LeClair (Westerly, RI), Jess Sandin (Warwick, RI), and Alyssa DaSilva (Rehoboth, MA) (who is injured but was still in attendance to be honored). The Lady Knights lost a heartbreaker to the Pride 3-2 on overtime. With the loss the Lady Knights fall to 8-4-2 on the season.
There was a huge crowd on hand at the CCRI soccer complex in Lincoln with hundreds of cheering fans to watch the Lady Knights in their final home contest and they were treated to a game that had tremendous excitement with lead changes and momentum swings. As the game began Springfield threatened early after being awarded a penalty kick just a couple minute into the contest. However, CCRI Keeper Alex Place (East Greenwich, RI) stoned the attempt smothered the ball so there was no second chance opportunity. But I the 21st minute Springfield got on the board scoring on a breakaway giving them a 1-0 lead. The Pride would go into halftime leading 1-0.
In the second half Sophomore Tri-Captain Jess McCaughey scored on a pass from Jess Hammond (Warwick, RI) which McCaughey lofted over the Pride Goalkeeper with a high arcing shot that found the top corner of the net tying the score at 1-1. About fifteen minutes later the Lady Knights tallied another goal as Jess Hammond received a long crossing pass and was able to tuck another goal into the bottom corner of the Springfield net to give CCRI the 2-1 advantage. The second goal was assisted by Tri-Captain Britt LeClair and Sarah Mauricio (Tiverton, RI). The Lady Knights kept the lead until 15 minutes left in the game when Springfield was able to score again on a counter attack breakaway tying the game for the second time this time with the score 2-2. Each team was looking to get the game winner as time winded down in the game and with less than five minutes left Tri-Captain Cait McGarry forwarded the ball towards two fast-breaking Lady Knights: Britt LeClair and Jess Sandin who were sprinting with a Springfield defender as the Springfield keeper charged from the net. Sandin was able to get her toe on the ball first, beating the keeper but deflecting off the crossbar, deflecting down to the goal line with back spin and the Springfield defender made an excellent play to head the ball out of bounds before Sandin or LeClair could finish, leaving the CCRI fans heartbroken.
As the teams went to extra time CCRI controlled much of the play but could not get the finisher. However, about half way through the first overtime period Springfield stole the ball on a breakaway and put away a winner to with by the final tally of 3-2.
The final regular season game for the Lady Knights will be next Wednesday October 24th when they will travel to Franklin, MA to play the Bulldogs of Dean College at 3:30pm
