Lady Knights go 8-0 to win Holyoke Volleyball Invite!
The CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team traveled to Holyoke, MA to compete in the Holyoke volley all Invitational over the weekend. The Lady Knights went a perfect 8-0 over the weekend amassing an impressive 16-2 game record over the two-day tournament. The teams included: New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI) from Concord, NH; Springfield JV from Springfield, MA; Word of Life Bible Institute from Pottersville, NY; Mass–Amherst Club Team from Amherst, MA; Northern Essex Community College from Haverhill, MA; and the host Holyoke Community College form Holyoke, MA.
On Saturday the Lady Knight began a little slowly but gained momentum as the day progressed. Here were the scores: CCRI defeated NHTI: 25-9, 25-27 and 15-10; Springfield JV: 25-21, 23-25 and 15-12; Holyoke CC: 25-17 and 25-14; and lastly UMass-Amherst: 35-21 and 25-18 to go 4-0 in matches 8-2 in their games on the Saturday. On Sunday, the Lady Knights were pretty much perfect. First they defeated Word of Life; 25-16 and 25-12; Northern Essex CC: 25-9 and 25-7; Word of life again in the tournament Semi-finals: 25-7 and 25-20; then defeated Springfield JV in the Championship match: 25-18 and 25-19. On Sunday the Lady Knights were 4-0 in matches and 8-0 in their games. With the eight victories the Lady Knights improve to 20-5 on the season.
This was a great weekend for the CCRI Lady Knights’ volleyball team! The first day started off with two tough matches: NHTI and Springfield JV with both opponents taking their matches to three-game “nail biters.” Fortunately, the Lady Knights got a strong defensive game from Libero Haley Greenwood (Goldsboro, NC) in third game versus NHTI with five digs. The Lady Knights also got solid blocking versus Springfield JV in game three from Janny Cabrera (Providence, RI) with 2.5 blocks. Cabrera was helped by Megan Del Re (Coral Springs, FL) with two blocks and Jenna Ayala (Paterson, NJ) also added a block which helped the Lady Knights pull out two key victories that led to the team going 4-0 for the day.
On the second day CCRI continued to dominate the competition. They started off the day with a match versus Word of Life and although their opponents put up a scrappy defensive fight they couldn't stop CCRI's serves with the Lady Knights racking up 10 aces on 51 serving attempts. The final game of pool play against Northern Essex CC saw CCRI continue a ruthless offensive onslaught led by Janny Cabrera had six kills, with a 42% efficiency rate while adding two aces, Megan Del Re added five kills, with a 63% efficiency and seven aces, and Jenna Ayala with five kills at a rate of 71%. What could not go without notice was the great defense from Co-Captain Paula Cadavid (Lincoln, RI) with 11 digs and three kills, Haley Greenwood with nine digs and two aces. However, without Co-Captain Setter Annie Ragan (North Kingstown, RI) who orchestrated the CCRI attack with 17 assists they wouldn't have been able to run such a smooth offense.
In the Semi-finals the Lady Knights faced-off against Word of Life again and for the second time in three hours, CCRI was too much for them to handle. Cabrera and Del Re just kept rolling with Janny with nine kills hitting at 53% and Megan with eight kills hitting 46%. In addition, Cabrera backed-up her stellar attacks with six solo blocks and four aces and while Haley Greenwood and Paula Cadavid played solid defense: Cadavid with 10 digs and Greenwood with 13 digs. The Semi-finals were over pretty swiftly bringing CCRI to face Springfield JV in yet another Tournament Final.
The Lady Knights brought a tremendous sense of determination and urgency when the match began. Head Coach Samantha Amaral commented “We wanted revenge for the NHTI finals loss to Springfield JV on Sept 29th. Unfortunately, that hunger for revenge proved a crippling start to the finals match. CCRI wanted it so bad that some early defensive mistakes found them down 8-14 in the first game.” With a slight defensive adjustment from the coaching staff, the Lady Knights were able to tie the game at 14-14 causing the Springfield JV coach to call a timeout to try and stop the bleeding. But the Lady Knights proved to be just too strong for Springfield. Coming out of the timeout, Springfield's middle hitter crushed a ball which looked like a sure kill however an outstanding dive from Haley Greenwood kept the ball alive resulting in a devastating kill from Lady Knights’ middle hitter, Megan Del Re. From that point on CCRI put their foot on the gas and never looked back finishing Springfield JV's season and going 8-0 to win the Holyoke Volleyball Invitational.
Holyoke did not choose an All-Tournament team but here are some notable tournament statistics for the Lady Knights: Co-Captain Annie Ragan: 159 assists, 22 kills, 16 blocks, and eight aces,; Co-Captain Paula Cadavid: 50 kills, 89 digs, and 11 aces and Janny Cabrera: hit at 40 % with 62 kills, 32 blocks, and 21 aces. Also helping the Lady Knights was Megan Del Re: 36 kills, 14 blocks, and 18 aces, Jenna Ayala: 13 Kills and 10 blocks, and Haley Greenwood: 85 Digs and 15 aces.
The next matches for the Lady Knight will be Saturday the 20th when they will travel back to New Rochelle, NY to play No. 18 ranked Monroe College for a tri-match with them and Delaware Technical Community College and once again look to exact revenge on the Mustangs.
