Knights’ tennis competes at Nationals, Bouchard named Player of Year!

05.12.13: The CCRI Knights tennis team has traveled to Plano, TX to compete in the 2013 Men’s Tennis National Tournament hosted by Collin College. Over the weekend prior to the Championships the coaches meet to discuss seeding and also to select a National player of the year. For the third time four years a CCRI player took homer that honor. CCRI Captain Ross Bouchard (South Kingstown, RI) was named 2013 NJCAA Division III Tennis Player of the Year. The first to take home the honor for CCRI was Alex Cavanagh in 2010, and then Mike Fallone, the current CCRI assistant coach, in 2012 and now Bouchard has made it three in four years for the Knights. Head coach Deb Panzica commented on her sophomore Captain “He totally deserves it! He has been a leader for us since day one this year and I am glad that all the other coaches recognize what a great player and teammate he his!

In addition the draws were also set over the weekend and all of the Knights are in action beginning Monday morning. In First Singles John Chammat (Cumberland, RI) will face No. 1 seed Maclane Smoke from Brookdale CC (NJ) at 9:00am EST (8:00am CST). In Second Singles Otniel Lopes (Pawtucket, RI) will face Carlos Munoz from Bergen CC (NJ) at 9:00am EST. In Third Singles, National Player of the Year, Ross Bouchard will face Kyle Figel from Bergen CC at 9:00am EST. In Fourth Singles Sean Gorman (Wakefield, RI) will face Nick Moore from Oxford College (GA) at 9:00am EST. In Fifth Singles Tim Holzinger (Foster, RI) will face No. 2 seed Eric Sapiro from Bergen CC (NJ) at 9:00am EST. In the Sixth Singles Eddie Papineau (Scituate, RI) will face Roger Hunt from Oxford College (GA) also at 9:00am EST.

In the doubles flights, in First Doubles Chammat and Gorman will face Mike Perrone and Donovan Vassalotti from Gloucester County CC (NJ) at 1:00pm EST. In Second Doubles Bouchard and Holzinger will face Alex Day and Nick Moore from Oxford College (GA) at 1:00pm EST. Finally, in Third Doubles Lopes and Papineau will face Mike Mares and Matt Schrader from Onondaga CC (NY) also at 1:00pm EST.
