Lady Knights fall to Muscatine and St. Clair

The CCRI Lady Knights’ softball team continued play at the National Training Center in Clermont, FL on Monday with a split doubleheader versus Muscatine Community College from Muscatine, IA and St. Clair County CC from Port Huron, MI.  The Lady Knights lost 6-0 to Muscatine and 7-5 to St. Clair.  With the losses the Lady Knights begin the season 0-4     
 
Game 1
CCRI- 0 Muscatine- 6
On the mound for the Lady Knights Katie Paddock (Providence, RI) got the start and pitched four innings allowing four runs only one of them earned on seven hits walking one a striking out one and took the loss.  Paddock was relieved by Macayla Paiva (West Greenwich, RI) who threw three innings giving up two runs, both unearned on four hits walking one a striking out one.  Both pitched well but did not get any run support to help their causes.
 
At the plate for the Lady Knights freshman Tri-Captain Liz Coburn (Chepachet, RI) had a great day going 3-3 and Amber Boucher (Warwick, RI) had two hits.  Also getting hits for the Lady Knights were Tri-Captain Mel Iadeluca (Warwick, RI), Kate Fowler (Warwick, RI), and Brittany Smith (North Providence, RI).  The Lady Knights managed nine hits but could not get a run on the board to help the strong pitching efforts.     
 
The big inning for Muscatine came in the third when they got three runs they had scored one run in the first and two runs in the sixth.    The Lady Knights threatened in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings with multiple hits but could not push a run across the plate.
 
Game 2
CCRI- 5 St. Clair County CC- 7
On the mound for the Lady Knights Tri-Captain Mel Iadeluca got the start and got into trouble early lasting just two innings allowing six runs, five earned with one strikeout.  Iadeluca was relieved by Katie Paddock who threw one inning allowing only a single hit.  Paddock was relieved by Dara Patton (Cranston, RI) who threw four innings allowing just two hits and one earned run with a walk and a strikeout.  After the rough first two innings the Lady Knights hurlers were able to shut-down St. Clair to allow the offense to get back into the game.
Offensively for the Lady Knights Alex Place (East Greenwich, RI) had a two RBIs single, two runs scored and a stolen base and Tri-Captain Liz Coburn added two hits, a runs scored, and an RBI.  Also helping he Lady Knights’ offense was Tri-captain Izzy MarcAurele (Cranston, RI) with a hit, run scored, and an RBI,  Kyrie Craig (Warwick, RI) worked two walks, with two stolen bases, and  a run scored, and Sara Deal (North Kingstown, RI)added a hit and a RBI.  Rounding out the CCRI offense was Amber Boucher with a hit, stone base and run scored and Brittany Smith had a hit and stone base.    
 
After getting behind early the Lady Knights mounted a comeback in the fifth inning. Kyrie Craig leads-off the inning with a walk, followed by a single by Amber Boucher and a single by Alex Place that scores two runs. Izzy MarcAurele gets an RBI with a two-out double scoring Place. Topped-off by Liz Coburn also who added a two out single picking up an RBI.  That cut the lead to 7-4 St. Clair.  The Lady Knights added a run in the seventh on a RBI by Sara Deal but that is a close as they would get falling by the final score of 7-5.
 
The Lady Knights are back in action Tuesday for two very tough games.  The first will be at 11:00am versus Cuyahoga CC form Cleveland, OH and at 3:00pm versus Polk State from Melbourne, FL.   
The Community College of Rhode Island, New England’s largest comprehensive community college, enrolls nearly 18,000 students in credit courses and thousands more in non-credit and job training classes. Its athletic program boasts 12 varsity programs and an academic support program for all student-athletes.
