Smith sets three marks as Lady Knights nail Nassau 114-50!
The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Lions of Nassau Community College form Garden City, NY on Saturday. The Lady Knights defeated the Lions 114-50 to improve to a program best 18-2 on the season!
It did not take long for the Lady Knights to prove they were the better team on Saturday as the sprinted out to a 20 point lead which they extended to 30 points 58-28 by halftime. In the second half CCRI kept up the intensity especially on defense and pulled away to won comfortably 114-50.
It was an historic day for the Lady Knights as CCRI Captain Jahira Smith (Brooklyn, NY) set three milestones while helping her Lady Knights defeat Nassau. Smith scored 23 points including a 3-pointer on her last shot to move into the No.7 spot on the CCRI All-time scoring list with 850 career points just ahead of Jerilynn Johnson who had 849 from 1989-1991. But Jahira was not done there as she dished out five assists to give her 278 career assists making her the all-time career assist leader moving her ahead of Nicole Girard who had 274. If that wasn't enough, for good measure she also swiped a CCRI single-game steal record with a ridiculous 13 steals! Smith is the only Lady Knight with over 200 steals with 222 career steals. The next closest on the steals list is Denise Scott with 60 less at 162 career steals. Smith’s overall stat line for the game was 23 points, 13 steals, five assists, four rebounds and three blocked shots. Head Coach Kate Lynch commented on her sophomore Captain’s feats: "Jahira is a very special athlete and young lady. She is rewriting the record books at CCRI, but that is the last thing on her mind. She is an extremely unselfish player. ‘Jah’ is the type of player who would rather win ball games and have the team become successful. She is an amazing athlete and I am so proud of her. She has worked tirelessly over the last year and a half both on and off the court. I am truly happy that she is finally getting the recognition that she so well deserves."
Other big games for CCRI included: Lexi Barros (New Bedford, MA) with 21 points, six steals and six assists and Nyjah Porcher (New Britain, CT) with 20 points, six rebounds and six assists. Also playing well was Ahnyyah Jackson (Hackensack, NJ) who added 16 points and six steals, and Treedy Ward (Boynton Beach, FL) added 15 points three steals and three assists. As a team the Lady Knights swiped a season best 32 steals!
Coach Lynch added after the game: "We came ready to play today. Our energy level and effort level was very consistent from everyone. We were very unselfish with the basketball today and when we are as unselfish as we were, we are fun to watch."
