12.08.12: The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team traveled to Batavia, NY to play in the Genesee Community College Cougar Classic. The Knights faced-off against the hosting Cougars in their first game of the Classic and fell in an overtime heartbreaker 90-89. With the loss the Knights fall to 5-4 on the season.
The Knights played with a lot of heart desire and determination but in the end came out on the short end of the stick against the hosting Cougars. CCRI battled through a sluggish first half which saw them trailing by as many as 12 points with the score 40-28 before going on a 7-3 run to close the half trailing by just eight points 43-35. Some of the sluggishness may have been due to the fact the Knights were playing without their floor general Bryan Yarce (Cranston, RI). In the second half the Knights played possibly their most inspired and most exciting half of the season. The Knights stormed back from a 16 point second half deficit 59-43 to tie the game 72-72 with four minutes remaining. The Knights’ comeback was led by Co-Captain Desmond Williams (Torrington, CT) who scored 21 of his game-high 28 points in the second half with help from Rob Hazard (North Providence, RI) and Co-Captain Isaac Medeiros (Johnston, RI) who each scored eight second half points. The Knights outscored the Cougars 23-9 during their comeback run. The Knights would even take a lead 75-74 on a 3-pointer by Williams with a couple minutes left. Genesee would regain the lead before CCRI would tie the game 79-79 with 1.7 seconds remaining in regulation on a Medeiros rebound and put back. The two teams went into OT with the score tied at 79. Both teams traded the lead and with four seconds left and the score tied at 89 the Knights missed a shot which led to a Genesee fast-break and the Knights fouled the Cougars’ Stanley Peacock with .04 remaining who hit 1-2 free throws to give Genesee CC the hard-fought one point 90-89 victory in overtime.
The Knights were led by Co-Captain Desmond Williams who scored a game-high 28 points, including 21 in the second half with six rebounds and four assists followed by Co-Captain Isaac Medeiros who charted a double-double with 14 point and 13 rebounds while adding three assists and two steals. Also helping the Knights was Co-Captain Steve Bevilacqua (Exeter, RI) scoring 12 points on 4-8 shooting from 3-point land and Rob Hazard added eight points and a team-high seven assists.
Head Coach Rick Harris commented after the loss “It was a valiant effort by our young men tonight and I was proud of their comeback effort. We must get better at coming out of the gate though and play more complete ball games. Tonight we were superb for about 15-20 minutes. That is not enough to beat good teams especially on their home court. We will work hard to correct this and become the team that we know we are capable of being.”
