04.28.13: The CCRI Lady Knights softball team traveled to Brockton, MA to play the Warriors of Massasoit Community College for the Region XXI softball championship series over the weekend. On Saturday the Lady Knights lost the first game 9-0 but won the second 2-1. On Sunday the two teams play in a winner take all for the Region championship with the Warriors coming out ion top 12-3. With the 2-1 weekend the Lady Knights end their season 13-14. Massasoit Community College advances to the District championship to be played at Mercyhurst North East in North East, PA the weekend of May 4th and 5th.
CCRI- 0 Massasoit- 9 in four and half innings due to the Mercy Rule
On the mound for the Lady Knights was sophomore Dara Patton (Cranston, RI) who pitched four innings giving-up nine runs, eight earned on 12 hits, walking four and striking out three batters to take the loss. The Warriors had a great game at the plate and unfortunately for CCRI though they did not play poorly they could not string any hits together to score runs and Massasoit did.
Offensively for CCRI Co-Captain Mel Iadeluca (Warwick, RI) had a double in the second inning as did fellow Co-Captain Liz Coburn (Chepachet, RI) in the fourth inning. Rounding out the Lady Knights’ offense was Kate Fowler (Warwick, RI) who added a single but that is all the offense for CCRI as they fell in four and a half. They must win the next two games to advance to the district championship.
CCRI- 2 Massasoit- 1
On the mound for the Lady Knights in the second game was freshman Macayla Paiva (West Greenwich, RI) who threw seven strong innings allowing just one run, zero earned runs while scattering eight hits, walking one and striking out five Warrior batters to earn the important victory.
At the plate for the Lady Knights Sarah Deal (North Kingstown, RI) led the way with two hits, a triple and a double and also had both CCRI RBIs. Also helping the Lady Knights’ offense was Tri-Captain Liz Coburn with two hits, while Tri-Captains Mel Iadeluca and Izzy MarcAurele (Cranston, RI) added a hit and a stolen base apiece. Also helping the CCRI attack was sophomore Kyrie Craig (Warwick, RI) with two hits and Kate Fowler added a hit and a sacrifice
Fowler had a two out bunt single in the first inning but that was the only hit. Iadeluca added a lead-off single in the second but that was it. Alex Place (East Greenwich, RI) had a one out walk in the third inning followed by a single by Coburn but CCRI was still yet to score. Deal had a one out double in the fourth followed by a single by Craig but the Lady Knights still had not scored the two runs for CCRI were scored in the sixth inning: MarcAurele led-off with a double followed by a walk by Iadeluca and then a two RBIs triple by Deal, while Craig also had a hit. The only run for Massasoit came in the first inning as the Lady Knights got the hard-fought 2-1 victory.
CCRI- 3 Massasoit- 12
Macayla Paiva got the start for the Lady Knights in the deciding game and pitched three innings giving up six runs, only one earned on four hits and walking one Warrior batter to take the loss. Paiva was relieved by Dara Patton who threw three innings giving up six runs on five hits, walking one and striking out one. Paiva started the game. Allowed three runs in first, none earned, and three in the third only one was earned. Patton came in to pitch in the fourth inning also allowing six runs but none earned; one in the fourth five in the sixth.
Leading the way for CCRI was Liz Coburn and Sarah Deal with two hits including a runs scored each. Kate Fowler added a double, RBI and a run scored while Amber Boucher (Warwick, RI) added two hits, Paiva added an RBI double and Mel Iadeluca added a hit and an RBI
Offensive re-cap: Coburn had one out single in first. Deal had one out double in second and scored on a two out RBI double by Paiva. Boucher also had a hit. Coburn led-off third and reached on an error, scored on an RBI double by Fowler, who scored on an RBI sacrifice squeeze by Iadeluca. Deal also added a hit. Coburn led-off fifth with a double. Iadeluca had a hit in the sixth. Boucher had a hit in the seventh. Defensive highlight: Kate Fowler had a beautiful pickoff at third when the runner was being intentionally walked and caught the girl on third off guard with a snap throw to get her out.
