Lady Knights Sprint Past Springfield JV 5-1!
Warwick, R.I. – September 7, 2011: The CCRI Women's soccer team hosted the Pride of Springfield College JV squad Tuesday in Lincoln. The Lady Knights defeated the Pride JV 5-1. With the victory they improve to 2-0 on the season.
Both teams went back and forth throughout the beginning of the first half with the Lady Knights having the better of the play and scoring opportunities. In the 30th minute of play freshman forward Jessica McCaughey (Warwick, RI) took a nice pass from freshman Brittany LeClair (Westerly, RI) and lofted the ball over the Springfield goalkeeper from about 18 yards out to give the Lady Knights a 1-0 advantage. As CCRI continued to dominate play, freshman midfielder Cassandra Tasich (Wakefield, RI) broke in from the left side and rifled a beautiful shot from the left corner of the field to the far right corner of the Springfield net making the score 2-0 in the 40th minute of play. Just three minutes later freshman Caitlyn McGarry (Warwick, RI) parked a nice shot high and into the Springfield net on a nice pass from Sophomore Captain Defender Becca D'Andrea (Cumberland, RI) giving the Lady Knights a commanding 3-0 halftime lead.
In the second half CCRI continued to dominate Springfield. Just 13 minutes into the half freshman Brittany LeClair knotted her 2nd goal of the season in close on a rebound off of a shot from freshman midfielder Kayla Resendes (Cumberland, RI) giving the Lady Knights a 4-0 lead. Just 12 minutes later LeClair returned the favor and set up Resendes for the fifth CCRI goal of the game. However, with just 10 minutes remaining in the match Springfield spoiled CCRI's freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Viens' (North Attleboro, MA) shutout bid tallying their only goal of the contest making the score 5-1. After a Lady Knights' defensive breakdown a Springfield forward broke in alone and Viens made a great point blank save but Springfield secured the rebound and scored as the CCRI defenders could not recover in time.
Freshman forward Brittany LeClair continued to shine picking up a goal and two assists on the day. Freshman midfielder Kayla Resendes tallied a goal and an assist. Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Viens picked up her first college victory helping the Lady Knights to their second victory in as many games. Head Coach Dennis Grassini commented after the game; "Coach Bannan and I were very pleased with our team's effort today in very bad rainy conditions. They dominated the match and we got goals from five different people which are a good sign."
The Lady Knight's next match will be this Saturday in Lincoln as they will host Bristol Community College at 12:00 noon.
