The CCRI cross country team hosted their only meet of the season the 2011 Tri-State Invitational on the CCRI Flanagan Campus in Lincoln, RI.  CCRI hosted Community Colleges and Four-year schools from Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts for the Invitational. The CCRI Men’s team tied for second with Worcester State with 54 total points with the overall men’s winner being Mitchell College with 49 points in the six team field. The course was a modification of the 2007 NJCAA Championship course with a distance of 4.75 miles and due to the weather it was wet and muddy.

The Knights were sparked by three runners finishing in the top 10 of the race.  Only five points separated the top three teams. CCRI was led by Bobby Allen (Cranston, RI) with impressive time of 25 minutes four seconds over the 4.75 mile course. Allen led the race from gun to finish line beating the second place finisher Ali Sherif of Mitchell College by a minute and forty four seconds. Ben Marino (Warwick, RI) finished second for the Knights in a time of 27:22 good for fifth place and Cole Maguire (Foster, RI) grinded out a 10th place finish in a time of 28:20. Isaiah Hector (Warwick, RI) placed just out of the medals (top 15) in 16th in a time of 29:47 he was followed by Stefan Cox (West Kingston, RI) who placed 22nd in a time of 32:02 and Chris Mann (West Warwick, RI) rounded out the Knights’ squad with a solid 25thplace finish in time of 32:21.

Head Coach Gregg Cornell commented after the race “This is a good team and it’s nice to see them run very well on their home turf even if they were sinking up to their ankles in mud on their home turf. Bobby (Allen) continues to impress while all the other guys are getting stronger each week.”

There was also a women’s race run on Saturday after the men’s race as well with Worcester State finishing first with 24 points followed by Clark University in second with 48 points, Wheaton in third with 64, Mount Ida 4th with 128, Mitchell 5th with 132 points and Anna Maria College sixth with 154 points.  The top five individual finishers for the women were: 1) Erin Donahue of Worcester State in 21:57, 2) Ali Barrett of Worcester State in 22:09, 3) Savannah Geasey of Wheaton in 22:17, 4) Erika Roth of Clark in 22:22 and 5) Heather Goodale of Clark in 22:33.

The Knights’ next meet will be Friday the 14th when they travel back to Franklin Park Boston, MA (site of Cod Fish bowl 9/24/11) to take part in the Emmanuel Saints Invitational.
