Lady Knights Shut Out Springfield JV 3-0!
The No. 12 ranked (National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America national poll) CCRI women’s soccer team traveled to Springfield, MA to play the Pride of Springfield College JV squad on Thursday night under the lights. The Lady Knights defeated the Pride 3-0. With the victory the Lady Knights improve to 13-2 on the season.
CCRI’s attack started right from the opening minute and in the fifth minute it paid off with a corner kick. Freshman forward Caitlin McGarry (Warwick, RI) took the corner and delivered a short pass to freshman defender Brittany Croll(East Greenwich, RI) who blasted a shot from 18 yards out to give the Lady Knights a 1-0 lead. Twenty minutes later the Lady Knights were awarded another corner kick. This time freshman midfielder Cassandra Tasich (Wakefield, RI) put up a beautiful ball that was headed in by freshman midfielder Jessica Sandin (Warwick, RI) giving CCRI a commanding 2-0 advantage at the half.
As the second half of play began CCRI came out storming missing numerous quality scoring chances. Fifteen minutes into the half freshman forward Caitlin McGarry was sent in all along on a nice pass from freshman midfielder Jessica Sandin. McGarry placed a very powerful shot past the Springfield goalkeeper, beating her cleanly for the Lady Knights third goal of the contest and 3-0 lead. CCRI continued to dominate play but Springfield came up with a couple threatening scoring chances of their own but the Lady Knights’ defense shut them down. Freshman goalkeepers Kelsey Viens (North Attleboro, MA) and Taylor Maurath (Burrillville, RI) split the time in goal sharing the shutout victory. Caitlin McGarry and Jessica Sandin each chipped in with a goal and an assist. McGarry now leads the team in scoring with nine goals and 14 assists for 32 total points with Jessica Sandin just behind her with 11 goals and six assists for 28 total points.
Head Coach Dennis Grassini said after the game “Coach Bannan and I are pleased with our team’s effort. We continue to get scoring from different people on a consistent basis and our defense has been excellent giving up only 13 goals in 15 games. We are quite pleased with the team’s overall effort.”
The Lady Knights will close out the regular season as they host rival Dean College next Wednesday the 26th at 3:30pm as they look to capture the program’s 11th consecutive New England Region Championship. They will also be celebrating their Sophomore Day for their three sophomore Tri-Captains that will be playing their final game at the CCRI Soccer Complex in Lincoln. The Tri-Captains to be honored will be: Becca D’Andrea (Cumberland, RI), Haley Durkin(Cumberland, RI) and Lauren Saritelli (Coventry, RI).
