Lady Knights beat Bunker Hill CC 5-1!
The No. 12 ranked (National Soccer Coaches Association of America national poll) CCRI Lady Knights’ women’s soccer team hosted the Bulldogs of Bunker Hill Community College from Charlestown, MA yesterday at the Flanagan Campus soccer complex in Lincoln, RI. The Lady Knights defeated the Bulldogs 5-1. With the victory the Lady Knights improve to12-2 overall and 8-0 in Region XXI play.
It didn’t take long for CCRI to get on the scoreboard as freshman forward Brittany LeClair (Westerly, RI) scored an unassisted goal as she beat the goalkeeper to the ball from in close and scored the Lady Knights first goal of the contest. A short time later freshman midfielder Jessica Sandin (Warwick, RI) blasted a wicked shot from about 18 yards out to score CCRI’s second goal. Sandin intercepted the ball from the Bunker Hill defense and placed a beautiful and powerful shot into the Bulldogs goal. CCRI continued to dominate the play with strong defense and good ball movement. The Lady Knights scored another unassisted goal making the score a demanding 3-0 when freshman midfielder Jessica McCaughey (Warwick, RI) stole the ball from a Bulldog defender and blasted a high and powerful shot from about 25 yards out that beat the goalkeeper cleanly. A short time later the Bulldogs got on the board as sophomore forward Isabelle Bjorkstrand scored from about 10 yards out on a scramble in front of the Knights goal making the score 3-1. However, CCRI came right back as sophomore co-captain midfielder Lauren Saritelli (Coventry, RI) scored on a pass from freshman forward Caitlin McGarry (Warwick, RI) making the score 4-1 at the halftime break.
As the second half began CCRI continued to dominate the play both offensively and defensively. Freshman Caitlin McGarry (Warwick, RI) took a pass from freshman forward Tori Tomassi (Westerly, RI) and scored with approximately 20 minutes remaining in the match giving the Lady Knights a commanding 5-1 lead and margin of victory. Freshman goalkeeper Taylor Maurath (Burrillville, RI) got the victory in goal.
Head Coach Dennis Grassini commented after the match “Coach Bannan and I are very pleased with our play today. Bunker Hill has a couple of legitimate scorers and our defense was excellent. Becca D’Andrea was given the task of shutting down Isabelle Bjorkstrand and she did an outstanding job. You couldn’t really blame anyone on the goal that Bjorkstrand scored, she is a fine player. Coach Bannan and I are pleased with our team’s overall effort, especially in the scoring department as we got goals from five different players today. Freshman Caitlin McGarry has had a tremendous week thus far scoring three times and assisting on another goal against Mercer County and picking up another goal and an assist today.”
The Lady Knights next match will be this Thursday as they travel to Springfield, MA to play the Springfield College JV team at 7:00pm.
