Smith and Porcher Lead CCRI over Mercer 71-38!
The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to West Windsor, NJ to compete in the Mercer Mixer. On Friday they faced host school Vikings of Mercer County Community College. The Lady Knights defeated the Vikings 71-38. With the victory the Lady Knights improve to 2-2 on the season.
CCRI began the game with tremendous intensity trying to get the hometown hostile crowd out of the game and did so by jumping out to a 10 point lead within the first seven minutes of the game. From there they never looked back, going into halftime leading by the comfortable 34-15 margin. The second half was very much the same as the first with the Lady Knights outscoring the Vikings 37-23 to cruise to the 71-38 victory and even their record at 2-2. With pressure defense the Knights finished the game with 27 steals, 24 deflections to go along with 19 assists while shooting 38% from the floor.
The Lady Knights were led by Co-Captain Jahira Smith (Norwich, CT) with a game-high 25 points while ripping down nine rebounds, swiping five steals and dishing out five assists. Smith was helped by Nyjah Porcher (New Britain, CT) who added 14 points, nine rebounds, five steals, and seven assists followed by Ashley Welly (Coral Springs, FL) with four points and nine boards. Rounding out eh Lady Knights’ attack was Monique Plummer (Fairfield, CT) scoring five points and four steals while Co-Captain Lauren Masse (Woonsocket, RI) canned eight points including two 3-pointers and snagged three steals.
CCRI wraps up the Mercer Mixer Saturday versus No. 3 ranked (NJCAA Division III poll) Brookdale Community College from Lincroft, NJ at 12:00pm.
