No. 11 ranked Knights nullify Notre Dame Prep 86-78!
The No. 11 ranked (NJCAA Division II men’s basketball poll) CCRI Knights men’s basketball team hosted the Crusaders from Notre Dame Prep (NDP), from Fitchburg, MA for a scrimmage/game Wednesday (the game counts for NDP but is a scrimmage for CCRI). The Knights defeated the Crusaders 86-78 but because it was a scrimmage for them their record does not change but is still a feather in their cap to beat an elite national prep school that was the 2011 National Prep school runner-up. In addition, in the first regular season NJCAA Division II men's basketball poll (11/15/11), the Knights are now ranked No. 11 in the nation
The Knights’ defense was again a catalyst for the Knights as they utilized multiple defenses to keep the Crusaders from settling into a groove. They had to combat Sam Cassell Jr, son for the former Celtic, who had 15 points in the first half and Xavier-bound Myles Davis who poured in 22 second half points and game-high 31 points including seven 3-pointers. However, the Knights held Cassell to one point in the second half and played tremendous team basketball with four Knights in double-figures to topple the Prep power.
The Knights were led by Sophomore Rogerio Livramento (Central Falls, RI) with a double-double including 18 points including the Knights’ only 3-pointer, 11 rebounds and a blocked shot followed by Anthony Henry (Danbury, CT) also with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds while adding two steals, two blocked shots and three thunderous dunks that brought the Cullen Fieldhouse crowd to their feet. Also contributing for the Knights was Desmond Williams (Torrington, CT) with 14 points, three assists, two steals and a blocked shot, Bryan Yarce (Cranston, RI) added 12 points including 8-10 from the free throw line, six assists and two steals, Addison Williams (Boulder, CO) added nine points eight rebounds and Trevor Mabry (Norwich, CT) added six points and 11 rebounds . As a team the Knights had 51 rebounds, 18 assists, 10 steals and six blocked shots.
Head Coach Rick Harris commented after the scrimmage: “Great team win tonight for our young men. As I told the team a win like tonight’s is due to their preparation daily in practice, their desire and their focus on playing team ball. We will enjoy the win tonight and get ready for our next game which is our first Region XXI contest versus Division III UConn-Avery Point.”
The Knights next game will be Tuesday the 22nd when they travel to Groton, CT to play the Pointers of UConn-Avery Point at 7:00pm.
