Knights’ defense downs Mercer 61-25!
The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team traveled to Mercer County Community College in West Windsor, NJ to take part in the Mercer/Burlington Classic. On Saturday the Knights faced-off against the Vikings of Mercer County Community College. The Knights defeated the Vikings 61-25. With the victory the Knights start their 2011-12 campaign 1-0.
The Knights led from the opening tip to the final buzzer. CCRI put together one of the best defensive performances in recent program history. Their suffocating defense held the Vikings to just five points in the first half going in at break 25-6. That is exactly what the Knights did blocking nine shots, swiping 17 steals including four by Bryan Yarce (Cranston, RI) with four steals. For the game the Knights held Mercer to a 20 percent field goal percentage. Offensively the Knights had 13 of their 15 players hit the scoring column. They were led by Addison Williams (Boulder, CO) with seven points and seven rebounds followed by Anthony Henry (Danbury, CT) and Desmond Williams (Torrington, CT) adding seven points apiece.
Head Coach Rick Harris commented after the game “Outstanding effort by our guys today. If this team commits to the defensive end of the court they have a chance to do some special things this season. I was pleased with 17 assists on 26 baskets while playing some outstanding team ball today. It makes our job easier when everyone plays as one.”
The Knights take on Burlington County College Sunday at 12noon in the Burlington/Mercer Classic.
