Knights Championship hopes dashed by Catawba Valley 11-5
The No. 7 ranked (NJCAA DII baseball poll) CCRI Knights baseball team continued their play in the Division II Baseball World Series in Enid, OK by playing the No. 9 ranked Buccaneers of Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) from Salisbury, NC. The Knights lost a hard fought battle with the Buccaneers 11-5. With the loss the Knights season comes to an end with a 33-13 record and their hopes of winning the World Series were dashed.
CVCC jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning. The Knights tied the score 1-1 in the top of the second inning when Mike Sherburne (North Kingstown, RI) scored after doubling on a fielders’ choice from Nick Coro (North Providence, RI) . CCRI took their first lead of the game in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Dylan Gracia (Middletown, RI) that scored John Razzino (Cranston, RI), they tacked on one more as they plated Andrew Crowley (Canton, CT) to give them a two-run cushion with the score 3-1. CVCC tied the game in the sixth inning, scoring two runs making the score 3-3. However, the resilient Knights answered with two runs in the seventh as Jamale Horn (Hoover, AL) scorched a double to right center field and later scored on a single by Tyler Santaniello (Lincoln, RI) who later scored on an RBI double by Nick Coro. Unfortunately, the seventh inning was very unkind to the Knights as the Buccaneers batted around the order to score eight runs capped a by a grand slam from Brett Huffman which gave CVCC an 11-5 lead which was eventually the final score.
On the mound for the Knights Brendan Cabral (Scituate, RI) got the call and pitched very well but some spotty defense undid a very strong effort. Cabral threw six and two thirds strong innings allowing eight runs, only three earned, walking four and striking out four. Cabral was relieved by Max Perry (Pawtucket, RI) who allowed a hit and a run, Perry was relieved by Co-Captain Chris Peralta (Providence, RI) who pitched a third of an inning and allowed two runs on one hit. Kevin Dale (Warwick, RI) pitched one inning a struck out one to close out the game for the Knights.
Offensively for the Knights Jamale Horn had two hits including a double and a run scored while reaching base three times, Nick Coro had a double with two RBIs and Tyler Santaniello had two hits, and RBI and a run scored. Also swinging the bat well for the Knights was Co-Captain Tom Gavitt (North Stonington, CT) had two hits and was hit by a pitch, Mike Sherburne had a double, a walk and a run scored, Marc Dorsi (West Haven, CT) added a hit and an RBI and Andrew Crowley had a hit and an run scored.
